Though the cool air ushered through its 19 vents and internal air channels may suggest otherwise, Giro's Ash Helmet isn't designed for racers. Or rather, it isn't designed only for racers. A cursory glance at its profile tells us that the Ash closely resembles either a more ventilated Air Attack helmet or a less spiky Aeon helmet.
Scott Allen of Giro Advanced Concepts corroborates this opinion, noting that he basically took the Aeon's design and straightened every line, flattened every curve and wisp, and reduced its Byzantine landscape to "the simplest form." So while it's fit for riding for training and competition, the elegantly understated Ash is also unassuming enough to avoid drawing extra attention while waiting at a stoplight on your morning commute. It achieves what seems impossible in cycling these days: a design that's both simple and smart.
Like its flashier siblings, the Ash's body consists of an EPS foam layer melded with a polycarbonate shell via Giro's In-Mold construction method. This produces a stronger helmet, an attribute further boosted by the internal reinforcement of Giro's nylon roll cage. The combined effect is a helmet that diffuses impact without shattering, keeping as much material as possible between your head and potential harm.
Giro's Roc Loc Air fit system governs the Ash's fit, keeping things tailored but comfortable for an unrestrictive fit that won't bounce around uselessly in your time of need. The Ash's penchant for comfort extends to the new Ultrasuede lining and chin pad and a removable visor for shade from the sun or shelter from the rain.
