The Amare's been working on herself.

The Giro Amare II women's helmet looks a lot like the original Amare, and that's because it is, but the big changes made for the sequel are ones you can't see: the introduction of the Thermoformed SL Roll Cage.

The SL Roll Cage is the skeleton that gives form to the helmet's EPS liner. It keeps the helmet together under impact, acting like a second shell to maintain the helmet's structural integrity and disperse impact. The added strength also means that Giro can add negative space to the Amare II without sacrificing safety, so it's more ventilated and lighter than its predecessor. The Amare II still takes advantage of Giro's In-Mold Composite reinforcement, which permanently fuses the outer shell and SL Roll Cage to the EPS foam liner to enhance the effectiveness of all three.

In an age of mass production, Giro's Roc Loc 5 Fit System makes the Amare II fit like a custom one-off. You can custom tune the fit tension as well as the fore-aft tilt of the helmet in seconds with one hand. Though other helmet manufacturers have similar adjustability options, none of them even come close to the weight savings that the Roc Loc system offers; it's almost 40% lighter than comparable systems.

Keeping your head cool during even the hottest, most critical road races is something that Giro has focused a great deal of attention on. Giro helmets are developed with a proprietary Wind Tunnel Ventilation System that combines 26 vents in the shell with exhaust channels within the belly of the helmet leading to the rear. Fresh, cool air from the front is strategically channeled around the head to help evaporate the sweat before exiting through the rear exhaust openings. It's a natural cooling system that you'll appreciate every ride.

Atmos Equivalent

  • Fit: True to size

This is the female version of the Atmos...a great helmet if you're looking for very good ventilation and a low profile fit. Giro tends to work with heads that are less round and more oval, from my own experience.

Snazzy helmet!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I've got a very small head so I had to try on several helmets before falling in love with this one. It's hard to go wrong with a Giro helmet, they do a great job. Super comfortable and ventilated on hot rides.

Snazzy helmet!

Number Two!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Size Bought: Medium

I bought this helmet while on a Trek Travel bike tour and love it so much I'm buying a second one. Can't beat the sale price! It fits great and as long as I braid my hair up high and put it through the cage it sits properly on my forehead (unlike profile photo). I don't know my head size but the Medium fits just fine with my thick hair.

Painful Helmet

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

I have had a Giro Aeon Helmet for the past 4 years. I liked to look of the Amare and ordered it without trying one on first. It seemed comfortable enough when I first tried it on, but then went for a ride, and it was awful. It gave me a huge headache and left dents in my forehead which were still there several hours later, There are no pads protecting your head from the helmet in the forehead area (unlike the Aeon) and the inside of the helmet therefore rests directly on your forehead. Ouch. Returning it.
