Item # GIR00AG

Safe slicing.

While we're not prepared to claim that the aerodynamics of Giro's Air Attack Shield Helmet is enough to make the difference between a podium and an also-ran, the wind tunnel-tested design certainly can't hurt your changes. This year's updated version continues to offer many of the same lightweight, efficient features as the previous versions with the addition of a redesigned shield to further improve its drag-shedding capabilities. The polycarbonate Flash shield, produced by Carl Zeiss Optics, serves to redirect air flow and keep your eyes protected and vision clear at high speeds. Post-race, it can be flipped up or unfastened entirely using its magnetic clips.

An In-Mold polycarbonate shell provides structural integrity to the Air Attack Shield's EPS foam body, diffusing impact in the event of a crash. For added comfort, Giro includes removable X-Static padding, which works with the Roc Loc Air fit system to ensure the helmet has a secure, streamlined fit. Six vents and internal channeling ensure that aerodynamics don't come at the cost of stifling heat by allowing for plenty of cooling airflow.

  • Removable Carl Zeiss Flash shield with magnetic clips
  • Roc Loc Air fit adjustment
  • X-Static padding
  • 6 vents

Great triathlon helmet!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I recently picked up one of these because of how much I liked the non-shield model. I haven't competed in any races with it yet but hope to do so this coming spring. All the same features apply! Great adjustable fit with the Roc-Loc Air. Better than expected ventilation. Now having the option of a shield is fantastic! Simply flip it around when not needed and it is safely and and conveniently stored out of the way.

The slippery slope of aero vs. venting

  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

Ive owned the base and shield helmet for two seasons and only made it a point to wear it all throughout this past summer in Houston TX. I was sold on it after noticing the reduction in wind buffeting and noise when you have your head down and forward. The complaints of it being a hot helmet are well founded. This helmet exacts its pound of flesh if you do not present it with the conditions required for it to perform as it was designed. If you're out front, and in the wind, with active airflow, this helmet breathes great. You can, and will feel the air go over your head inside. If you're living in the draft of a pace line, it negates all the engineering put into this helmet and you're left cooking your skull. Ventilation of the shield version against the base is negligible at best. The vents where the helmet meets your brow are meant to buffer against your face and then use the four vents on top to draw fresh air in and over. They're mostly effective, but not nearly as much as when you've got your head down and forward. I've worn it on multiple competitive centuries in temps well above 98F and was never any more uncomfortable than expected. The fit and finish are as well as any other upper end Giro helmet. Some people balk at the aesthetics, which I will agree, do take some time to grow on you. I find it interesting as this helmet is constantly compared to the Evade. Riding friends swear by that helmet, but also have the same complaint about it being a very hot helmet. I find that interesting as the number of vents is much higher than the Air Attack, so one would guess, more vents is much cooler. Perhaps that helmet needs the same conditions of the Air Attack as well. If you can stand the pain of living in the front and bringing the hurt to all behind you, at least be confident in the knowledge that your head will be quite cool, as well as the bit of effort saved from the aero benefits netted by the helmet itself.

140.6 approved.

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit: True to size

This helmet just saw my partner through a windy, relatively climb-heavy bike leg at Ironman Ceour d'Alene. She beat her target splits and entered T2 feeling a lot fresher than other competitors. I'm not sure how much the helmet actually helped, but every little bit can make the difference over 112 miles.

She also uses it for everyday road riding and training. The relative lack of vents hasn't given her any issues in Northern Utah's 100 degree summer.

My favorite "go-to" helmet

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This helmet has solved the problem I had with sport glasses. My eyewear prescription is *co$tly* to order sport sunglasses...I wanted to wear my own glasses and this shield helmet allows this. Snap on the magnetic shield and I can comfortably wear my glasses behind the shield. The helmet is super comfortable - I chose the Neon color to be visible and it matches my shoes (Gaerne carbon) Its also not hot at all in the summer, given the vent area.

There is some wind noise, but not more than other helmets in my experience.

Great helmet

I have a few of these same helmets due to different homes, bikes and accessories. I really like the look, fit and functionality, really like the shield which does not require I wear separate bike sunglasses. Great matte white, orange and fluo yellow colors.
