keep your legs warm and dry

Leg warmers and shorts keep your knees from chilling when the temperatures are cool. But, if the multiple layers aren't taking the edge off of biting, wet winter winds, it's time to get your legs into a pair of the Giordana G Shield Bib Tights.

Sewn into a comfortable race fit from contoured panels of the Super Roubaix AZ fabric, the G Shield Bib Tights use a minimal amount of seams to eliminate the places that moisture can penetrate. The lining of the tights have a soft-brushed loft that retains warmth while allowing moisture to escape. Super Roubaix uses a knit with an incredible stretch that forms to your body and accommodates your movements in the saddle. An Acqua Zero treatment has been applied to the material at the nano-level to vastly increase the water-repellency of the tights. To further G Shield's resistance, a silicone heat application has been applied to prevent water from seeping in through the seams.

The bib uppers are made from PowerNet Mesh, to keep the bibs feeling light and airy when you're layered up. PowerNet Mesh also has incredible breathability and moisture-transfer abilities that keep you dry and comfortable in nasty weather.

Typically reserved for Giordana's top-level shorts and bibs, the G Shield Bib Shorts come with a Cirro O.F. insert -- a multilayered chamois that's made to keep you comfortable during a long duration in the saddle. The top-layer is made from a nylon microfiber that's been infused with Aloe Vera during construction. A natural defender against bacteria, Aloe protects and heals the skin while you ride. The mid-layer is a 4mm, waffled memory foam that manages moisture by circulating any dampness to the outside of the pad for evaporation. The bottom, 8mm foam layer is bonded with an ultra-fine protective liner. The Cirro O.F. insert stretches like elastic, and it conforms to your movements on the bike for protection where your shorts interact with the saddle.

Gripper elastic lines the hem of the tights to keep them in place, and reflective piping has been added on the calves to increase your visibility in low-light conditions.

The Giordana G Shield Bib Tights are available in the color Black and in five sizes from Small to XX-Large.

Not their best effort

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: Large

Got a set of these based on a favorable review and I had to return without using I'm afraid. The fabric is decent and the cut through the hip and legs is compressive. (185 lbs, 33' waist, size large). The fabric probably does have some water-shedding ability but I dismiss the idea that these would keep you warm in repeated downpours. The deal-killer for me was that the ankles are cut WAY TOO big. The last thing I want is tights with a big cold spot by the ankle. I had to pull them half way up my calf in order to fill out the lower leg opening and that's from a track rider with muscles FWIW. They need to stovepipe down nice and snug so you don't have air blowing in there! Giordana really needs to re-work these things with a STIRRUP and tighten up the cut of the lower leg. Not recommended. I can tell that Assos fits like it should although one has to get past the unholy price...

Great cold winter bib tights.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

I bought these G Shield long bib tights after reading some reviews from various bike mag reviewers. I wanted a true cold weather tight with some water resistance built in for winter's nasty conditions. Well this bib does the job well. I have not been in the rain yet but I have ridden in these tights from the high 40s (comfortably) down to what turned into 30F yesterday on a ride that started with 37F, 30F wind chill, 13 mph winds, and 75% humidity. In other words pretty damn cold. My legs never got cold and felt great. I am 6 feet and 215lbs so I still have some gut (which is going down) and it did take the XXXL to fit (ugh). I have never worn a bib size that large. I had ordered the XXL first and it was not going to work. Just for reference so you know what all I had on to be so cozy I wore the following: Giordana Forma Red Carbon jacket, Castelli thermo skull cap, Giordana neck gaiter, LG Defender gloves (thinsulate), and LG neoprene overshoe covers. *Update* I have now probably ridden in these tights about 25 times usually on cold night road rides. I can't imagine not riding in these before but yet I did. Beats the pants off the Pearl Izumi thermal tights (no chamois) I used before. Having said that I will say I notice my saddle a tad more in these bib shorts. I prefer the Craft Performance chamois in my Craft PB Grand Tour bib shorts over the Cirro chamois. I am slightly more cognizant of my sit bone contact with my Specialized Toupe Expert saddle with the Cirro. It may be because I have slightly wider sit bones. Still really like this G Shield tights. I ride in them all the time this time of year. *Update* 1/27/16 Finally got a wet ride in on these tights. At night, mid-40s started the ride in the rain which got harder and harder as the ride went on and the wind got gusty too. Rode for an hour in these conditions. Never got wet in these tights. I could feel some moisture in the tights but not real wetness. Never got chilled, the wind never cut through the tights. Solid piece of kit.
