Winter doesn't stand a chance

When it comes to technical cycling apparel, we can't think of anyone besides Giordana that's going to the length of blocking cell phone tower electrical interference. Seriously, over time, the mad scientists at Giordana have thought of everything. And it's that level of passion, care, and technical know-how that puts the flagship FormaRed Carbon Windfront Bib Tights on top of the winter cycling game.

Giordana's FormaRed bib tights are constructed from a sophisticated blend of fabrics that share in the single purpose of keeping you warm. And as the name suggests, the bib tights have a wind-resistant front panel to stave off the chills of riding. However, the name won't tell you that the bib tights also use the SuperRoubaix AZ material to keep you protected from wheel-spray. The seat panel of FormaRed uses this thick, stretchy , and breathable material for its water-repellent qualities. Covering the quads is Giordana's bread-and-butter winter-weight fabric, SuperRoubaix. This material uses an interlocking, microfiber knit construction that creates a highly breathable and warming loft. But, Giordana didn't only place it on the quads for warmth, SuperRoubaix is highly stretchable and also provides a slight compression that dissipates lactic acid buildup. Rounding out the tights' construction, the knees and calves are made from the brand new SuperRoubaix Carbon. Sharing the same interlocking knit as SuperRoubaix, SR Carbon controls the stretch of the knit in order to isolate muscles for a resistance to early fatigue. Additionally, the carbon fiber blocks out static and rogue atmospheric electrical interference for increased anaerobic output. Altogether, the materials work in harmony to keep you insulated, protected from the elements, and riding at your best.

The FormaRed Carbon tights use a multi-panel design, that when combined with the malleable fabrics, provides a complete freedom of movement. However, to preserve the fit while moving, Giordana included a silicone gripper at the cuffs. You'll also find Camlock zippers at the ankles for both security and adjustability. Ultimately, though, the bib straps provide the most stability to the fit of the tights. Combining strength with comfort, the uppers have been made from the wind-resistant and highly breathable AeroFix fabric. Also, the 'rear window' over the small of the back is constructed from the Naxos Mesh material. With the FormaRed uppers, security doesn't come at the cost of abrasion and sweat.

The bib tights' chamois is one that Giordana touts as being the most advanced in the industry -- the Cirro O.F.. We don't deal in absolutes, but we can say that it's the first chamois we've heard of with Aloe Vera particles directly infused into the threads of the microfiber. Aloe is not only a natural bacteria fighter, but its implementation in the fiber provides a cooling effect that protects and heals during activity. Below the skin layer, the Cirro has a 4mm-thick pad of waffled-texture expanding memory foam. The texture aids in ventilation by moving moisture to the perimeter of the chamois where accelerated evaporation can occur. The final layer of the chamois is a thick section of hand-sewn open cell padding with recessed channels for pressure relief. These technologies amount to a chamois that won't get wet and nasty 100 miles into a ride, let alone 20.

To enhance visibility in low-light conditions, Giordana incorporated reflective treatments throughout the jersey.

The Giordana FormaRed Carbon Windfront Bib Tights are available in the color Black and in five sizes from Small to XX-Large.

Best cold Winter Bibs I have tried

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

These are the best. I have worn these into the low 30's. Very comfy, and the legs aren't baggy (I hate). I usually wear a large to a Medium, and I wore a Medium in these, and they are great. They are worth full price, but getting them on sale is better. I also have a pair of Specialized windproof Deflect Bib tights, and these Giordana's beat them hands down. Best cold winter windproof bibs I have tried

Best Bibs Ever

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: XL

I purchased these after my girl friend bought me the Forma Red Jacket last season. ( The jacket is awesome by the way ). She swears by Giordana so I thought i would try the bib tights. I ordered these and the Castelli as I wanted to compare the two brands. By far, the Giordana bibs were superior. Much better construction, wider straps and I felt better use of high tech materials, especially in the front of the leg and knee areas. Pad is nice and I had no problems wearing them on an 80 mile ride. I've used these down as low as 25 degrees F with no problems. When it gets about 45 F however, they are a bit warm, but not too bad. The wind block on the front of the knee and the thigh is a real life saver. I have not used them in the rain, but the material does shed water from wet roads well. The Zippers are very high quality and easy to access and use. I got the size large first and exchanged them for the extra large. The straps on the large just seemed too short for me even at 5'10". The XL doesn't fit sloppy and is very comfortable. The Giordana Forma Red clothing is somewhat expensive, but the guys at CC always have great sales and I think the price to value is so worth it. Don't hesitate one minute on your purchase of these high quality bibs

Great Cold Weather Tights

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

I've worn these on days as cold as 0C and they were perfect. They kept me nice and toasty and the fit was really good. I am 5'5" and 130lbs and the medium fits really well.

I've also worn these on a day that was 12C and they are far to warm for those temps. If it's above 8C you'll probably find them far to warm.

First pair of winter tights; loved them

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Great tights. Very water resistant—I've worn them in pretty bad rain and been comfortable for a long time before soaking, and even then, they are not bad at all. They are incredibly warm. Have not been cold at all in the low thirties and mid twenties. I anticipate even in the teens, but haven't had the occasion yet. The chamois is great even for long rides. I can' think of one thing I don't like.

Must have for the winter

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

If you plan to ride during the coldest portions of the winter time, the FRC Windfront tights will keep you warm and dry. These are extremely warm. If you are riding in temps above 45degrees, the Windfront tights will be overkill.

Couldn't have said it better myself! My go to Bibs when it gets gnarly in NewYorkCity, January and February are brutal, my neighbors think I'm nuts for riding in such little clothing....:)....I wear the Bibtights and the Jacket with simple Assos 7 baselayer. I LOVE the vents on the Jacket!

Great bibs

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I use these in the dead of Minnesota winters and couldn't be happier with the performance of these bibs. The lining is comfortable on the skin, the fit is just right, the chamois feels right and the materials work well to keep the elements out. The medium is a bit snug for my 5'8" frame but I prefer the fit. The only issue I've had was a zipper failure on the cuff.

I don't think there is anything better

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I am 5'6", 150lbs and I ordered the MD size. The fit was good, wasn't super tight and wasn't loose either, just perfect. In winter, my fingers and legs usually get cold really fast, no matter how hard I pedal. I tried a few tights from other brands and finally zeroed upon these. I tested these tights in 28-32F weather and they kept me warm. I wouldn't say I was toasty, since the back panels of the bib tights have minimal insulation for extra breath ability.

Pros

1. The fleece lining ensures that they keep your legs warm.

2. Very light weight

3. Extremely comfortable and very "european fit".

4. Shoulder straps are wide and don't dig into your skin.

5. Ankle zippers make it easy to put them on.

6. Very small strip of reflective fabric next to the ankle zippers.

7. Unbelievably comfortable chamois.

Cons:

1. Wind breaker fabric blocks wind, but it is only in the shin area. This could have been expanded to the other area on the front.

The best bib tights I've ever owned

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These are extremely warm bib tights. The wind resistant panels works very well at keeping the biting cold wind at bay. The tights are super soft on the inside and are thicker than any other tights I've worn. The SuperRoubaix fleece is very flexible and this tight is not restrictive at all.

I typically only wear them if it is 40 degrees or colder. Coldest Temps I will ride in are 32 degrees but I have worn them in 27 degrees comfortably.

The fit is euro and so expect to go up a size compared to North American brands. I wear a size medium and I am 5'10" 150 lbs.

Two years later Scott.... are you still wearing these? Any further feedback?
