Conquer.

Few bikes in Fuji's line embody the brand's "Conquer your mountain" slogan as well as the Altamira 2.3 Shimano Ultegra Complete Bike. Its high-modulus carbon fiber frame is built with the same grand tour-winning geometry as the top-end Altamira, and it's fleshed out with Shimano Ultegra components and a cockpit provided by Fuji's sister company, Oval. The build kit means that, on a scale ranging from competition to recreation, it leans more towards the former but is still perfectly happy to take on long training days — in short, it's up for tackling any literal or figurative mountain that you encounter.

The build kit means that the Altamira 2.3 is also a claimed 860g lighter than the 2.5 model, a gain made by dint of the build kit alone. Virtually everything except the saddle has been upgraded for the 2.3 model. And it's apparent. When the Altamira 2.3 is fed watts, it responds like a racing bike, so the softer saddle feels a bit squishier than we'd expect on a bike like this. Still, that extra cushion serves as a welcome relief because, though the frame isn't as harsh as some of the pro-tier models we've ridden, it is, at its heart, a racing platform that isn't built for plush noodling.

The bike's drive spine comprises an exaggerated head tube junction, a tapered steerer, an oversized down tube, a generous PressFit 86 bottom bracket, and chainstays that swell to heroic proportions as they approach the crank. We've recently seen bigger tube sizes, but Fuji seems to have hit the sweet spot of virtually eliminating any feelings of a wagging bottom bracket or a mushy front end without tipping into the realm of unnecessary caricature. The Altamira is laid-up to meet certain ride quality characteristics, so it actually plays the part of a throw-down race bike that jumps the hole shot and tracks through sweeping descents instead of just trying to look like one.

As the tubes approach the seat juncture and rear axle, the beefy focus on stiffness gives way to road noise-absorbing comfort, with the usual flattened seatstays and top tube making an appearance. To be clear, "usual" isn't a knock on Fuji for being un-innovative, nor is it a suggestion that the Japanese firm phoned it in by not opting for arched tubes with wavy profiles. Instead, it's an acknowledgment that these shapes appear where they do because they dissipate road noise and help the saddle smooth out bumpy base miles.
