We've gushed about the kit and accomplishments of the Athertons and Carpenters of the world throughout these pages and on innumerable forums and online videos, but, with the 40 Float 27.5 203 HSC/LSC FIT limited Edition Fork, FOX Racing Shox gives us the chance to use the kit of the pros to foreground our own DH nastiness. This special edition model — limited to just 200 worldwide — is the same fork ridden by the actual Athertons and Carpenters of the world, updated with some slick graphical flair to celebrate their respective championships. Despite the graphical upgrade and some black anodization, the fork retains the stiffer crown and lowers of the non-limited versions, making for easier climbing and truer tracking on the other side.

By "other side," we of course mean the downhill, and the 40 Float's DH-specific qualities are what make it the best at solving lines on your local circuit. These include the obvious elements, like 40mm stanchions and 203mm of travel, and the not-so obvious but equally important features, like the high- and low-speed compression tuning options, which dial the suspension to precisely match a given track's particular ins and outs. Dialing the two settings separately gives the 40 Float a forgiving approach to square edges and landings without wallowing in G-out purgatory in dips, berms, and sudden rises.

FOX's Float air spring also enjoyed significant revision during the last redo, with FOX seeing off the old negative coil spring in favor a dual-chamber air spring. This neat trick of metal-to-air alchemy may be the single biggest contributor to the fork's weight loss, and when it's paired with the reduced number of smoother seals, it means the fork requires less force to initiate travel. The DH version has a titanic negative chamber, and the fork can be dialed to ramp-up harder by customizing its compression curve with volume spacers.

The new 40 Float's other arm houses the fourth generation of the FOX Isolated Technology (FIT4) damper. For FIT4, FOX uses an air-tight bladder, as opposed to a more common open bath system, so it's more resistant to debris contamination and stays smoother and more consistent between maintenance intervals. The damper itself replaces FOX's old Climb, Trail, Descend settings with an Open setting — where you'll likely spend most of your time — a firmed-up Medium setting, and a locked-out Firm setting that may only see use for fire road transitions and while rolling to the chairlift.
