Smooth evolution.

Few elements of the ever-evolving mountain bike industry seem as fickle as forks. It seems that every two or three years, a new generation of super performers appears, relegating the previous models to the dust bin. FOX's 36 FLOAT 29 140 RC2 is the latest addition to this army of usurpers; however, its combination of adjustability, maximum smoothness, and speed-oriented wheel size means that it's unlikely to be caught out by the future anytime soon.

The 36's crown has been redesigned to be both lighter and lower, resulting in a shorter axle-to-crown measurement across the board, so that installing the fork means minimal — if any — alteration of the bike's front-end geometry, unlike when installing some other forks, including FOX's previous 36 series. The fork's lowers have been re-engineered to be lighter and stiffer, as well, resulting in a chassis with greater rigidity to take advantage of your big wheels' penchant for speed. There's no weight penalty, though, as the 36 remains comparable to the 34 series of forks.

The 36 essentially comes in two families: the adjustable TALAS and the non-adjustable FLOAT. For 2015, the air spring systems on both feature a reduced number of seals and a higher-viscosity lube for smoother operation. Unlike the TALAS models, though, the FLOAT forks now include volume-adjusting spacers so that riders can fine-tune the system's ramp-up rate. This can be further dialed by adjusting the RC2 (Rebound Control 2), which affords two compression settings to maximize speed over technical terrain or fast singletrack, letting the 29-inch wheels really shine when it counts.

The FIT suffix indicates the fork's inclusion of a FOX Isolated Technology damper, which means that the fork's damper sits in an air-tight bladder, as opposed to a more common open bath system. This reduces debris contamination for a smoother, more consistent ride.
