Don't worry though, we have a lot more 27.5-inch Suspension Forks in stock than that.

Six is the new five.

With the apparently irreversible trend toward larger wheels and more aggressive geometry, the line between trail bikes and enduro sleds seems to be all but erased. 6-inch bikes are now expected to climb like 5-inch bikes, and 5-inches of travel has to be enough to handle terrain previously reserved for big hit machines. To accommodate this evolution, FOX's 34 Float 27.5 150 3Pos-Adj FIT 4 Fork is one of the main recipients of what FOX hails as the most thorough overhaul in the California-based manufacturer's storied history.

For 2016, the steerer, crown, uppers, lowers, and Float Air spring all adapt many of the technologies first pioneered in the Float 36 series. One immediately obvious result of this is that the new Float 34 forks shed a claimed grand total of 219 grams while actually getting stiffer. Of course, weight savings are great on paper, but the fork really makes its bacon by dint of on-trail functionality. With the upgrade to the all-new Fit4 Damper, the Float 34 is pulling mad pig.

The new Fit4's Damper shaft porks-out to 10mm for increased oil flow to the base valve, and the fork rides high for quick, controlled recovery during everything from big, square hits to successive, small impacts. The new 3-position Fit4 system also replaces CTD, changing the names from the overly-prescriptive categories of Climb, Trail, and Descend to a graduating scale covering Firm, Medium, and Open. While this change may read like an exercise in semantics, it entails a radical realignment of the 34 Float's capabilities that addresses virtually every issue we've had with CTD's damper in the past.

The most welcome change is that Fit4 migrates the adjustable sub settings from CTD's median Trail mode to the new Open setting. Open encompasses both Descend and Trail in order to take full advantage of the fork's high ride by handling most compression duties. This makes the fork that much more relevant to all-mountain situations, combining better small-bump compliance with more confident tracking through rock gardens and rough terrain. It doesn't wallow and handling stays on point.

The Medium setting also sees a dramatic change, migrating much deeper into the firm side of compression than the Trail setting did, so it's ideal for rooty XC courses and for climbing. The Firm setting remains self-explanatory: an XC lock-out that will likely see much less use in the new system — though we do still appreciate it while riding to the trail head or transitioning on logging roads.

FOX's tinkering wasn't just confined to the damper, though, as the Float air spring now omits the negative coil in favor of a self-equalizing air assembly. This is similar to the air spring chamber system that made the re-worked 36 series such a success, and its omission of a steel coil is a key contributor to the overall weight loss. Finally, a new system of spacers lets you easily temper the air shock's volume for dialing the mid stroke.
