In the ever-excitable enduro market, suspension of less than six inches is often considered insufficient for trail use. FOX Racing Shox humbly disagrees, offering the completely overhauled 32 Float 29 120 3Pos-Adj FIT4 Fork with 51mm as defense of its opinion. As a model series, the 32 Float's evidence is pretty hard to argue with, with its latest line of argument culminating in an XC win at Albstadt under a certain French legend. Even if you don't have the legs of Absalon, though, the 32Float's customized rake and updated air spring and damper system will provide all the room you need to carve out your own XC palmares.
A fork with 51mm of rake decreases the bike's trail, which results in less "dead" space between the steering axis and the hub. The design is an attempt to offset the floppy, low-speed steering issues that arise from the longer trails produced by today's taller wheels and slack geometries, so handling stays 26er-sharp at all speeds, whether climbing, ripping, or cleaning switchbacks and tricky terrain.
Regardless of its rake, a tiny-stanchioned fork's real job is to disappear on the trail. A lighter, stiffer chassis helps the 32 Float toward this goal, making it FOX's best featherweight, barely-there option for the aggressive XC climber who prefers the middle-ground of 27.5-inch wheels. FOX also lightens the load with the new Float Air Spring, which is now a dual-chambered, self-equalizing affair instead of the half air, half coil setup of the previous model.
While the updated air spring and lighter chassis are the key material changes, the new Fit4 damper adjustment system represents a change in functional philosophy. Fit4 toggles between Firm, Medium, and Open settings, with the latter of the three proving the most useful since it encompasses the range once divided between the old CTD system's Descend and Trail settings. Open also incorporates 22 adjustable sub settings so you can keep the new 32 Float's five glorious inches of travel wide open in all manner of circumstances to take full advantage of the fork's high-riding tendencies, improved small bump compliance, and nearly bottomless travel — all without sacrificing speed.
The Medium setting is much firmer than the Trail setting was, handling duties ranging from fast trails to lumpy climbs, and the Firm lockout setting returns as the ideal platform for fire road transition or sprinting when the finish line beckons. If you decide the easier initiation of travel is too light, the fork can be dialed to ramp-up harder with internal spacers to customize the spring's compression curve.
