For 2016, the FOX engineers bunkered down at their desks and rewrote the script on fork design, bringing the innovations from the 2015 36 Float line to the rest of FOX's stable of front-end suspension. The result of this process is a group of forks that are smoother and lighter than their predecessors, which also just happen to be ridiculously fun to throw around on the trails. The 2016 32 Float 29 100 3Pos-Adj FIT4 Fork (51mm Rake) sits on the XC-optimized end of the group, designed for cross-country and marathon riding experiences.
This fork features the fourth generation of FOX Isolated Techology (FIT4) damping system, replacing the previous CTD (climb, trail, descend) dampening positions with an updated three-position system that features Open, Medium, and Firm settings. The Open setting absorbs the old descend range as well as part of the former trail setting found in the CTD system, and features massive adjustability with 22 clicks of low-speed compression options to fine tune the four-inches of XC travel. Medium serves as a semi-lockout that we admit to often skipping in favor of the stiction-reducing action of the Open setting, and the firm setting is right at home climbing or sprinting to the finish line. The FIT4 system is easily adjustable with a quick flick of the lever to match your needs for any terrain.
Another big update to the 32 Float is a revamped Float Air Spring, featuring positive and negative air chambers that automatically equalize to provide a customized pressure balance for each rider. This system reduces the force needed to initiate travel to maintain small bump compliance and sensitivity across damper settings, regardless of rider size. Air volume spacers also let you customize the compression curve to fine tune the ramp-up feel of the air spring. This is all a very techy way of saying that the Float Air Spring is lighter than the previous systems and offers a smooth, comfy ride on almost any type of terrain.
This fork's 51mm of rake decreases the bike's trail, which results in less "dead" space between the steering axis and the hub. The design is an attempt to offset the floppy, low-speed steering issues that arise from the longer trails produced by 29-inch wheels and the slack geometries popular across the industry today, so handling stays 26er-sharp at all speeds, regardless of whether you're going up or down.
