Same GREAT Fox Quality

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've been wearing the Sargeant shorts for about 8 years now. The fit has changes over the years but the quality remains top-notch. I mostly use them for downhilling with a pearlizumi short inside. I don't like the fox liners b/c they don't fit me right. And I took my box-cutter and removed the cargo pockets from a couple of pairs for a lighter cross-country feel. These are great!

Heavy, but heavy duty

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These are thick, heavy shorts, but I love the stretchy material and the liners fit me perfectly. I would use them more as a trail or park short.

Almost perfect...

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I wore these shorts pretty much every day during the spring and summer, both on the bike and off. They fit well, material is comfortable and dries fast, and are the perfect length. The only drawback (as another reviewer noted) are the mesh pockets, as any sharper objects (ex. keys) will eventually tear holes in them.

no lens cloth

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I got these cheap shorts a few months ago because I have several other pairs of the same shorts. I was bummed out heavily when I went to reach for the lens cloth but it was not there> It's not something I use all the time but I do miss it in the newer ones I bought. Other than that big point I do like fit and function of these shorts and for 60% off they were a sick deal

False Advertising

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Hey Backcountry.com, i purchased these shorts a few weeks ago and they DID NOT come with the advertised detachable lens wipe chamois. I emailed customer service about this almost immediately and the polite chat person said they'd look into it and get back to me. OK, I was still feeling pretty stoked on my shorts so i jammed a handkerchief in my pocket and went for a ride. A few days later I received an email saying that unfortunately Fox no longer provided this feature on their current model, HOWEVER, a replacement pair of the exact same last years shorts with the same missing chamois were on the way and all I had to do was pay 7 more bucks to send the exact same thing back. Don't get me wrong, I don't need much of an excuse to seize the opportunity of standing in line at the post office during my lunch errands, but this proposal didn't seem to address the problem at hand (even though I can't escape the feeling that i missed a better than the usual awesomeness we've all come to expect when being crammed in a lobby legal designated to hold 7 people with 3 times that many people and their packages at 12:47 PM on a Tuesday). I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt here in that perhaps the rep was at the tail end of an unexpected double shift after a long night of drinking (or some other perfectly understandable scenario). But, when I pressed the issue of why a Fox just decided to come knocking on your wear house doors to take back all the chamois from last years (2012) short that obviously came with this accessory (per your posting still) because the 2013 model no long was going to include that feature, I got a repeat of the above and less than "thought-full" offer. This is disappointing bc.com. Not only should you not be adverting this falsely still after a few weeks of bringing it to your attention, you should be doing more than asking the customer to spend another 7 bucks and trip to the post office to achieve the same unsatisfactory result.

Bomber Construction

really great short. it's a great pair of chamois for trail riding. cargo pockets stretch well and hold sunglasses or snacks just fine, the mesh pockets can tear easily though. the adjustable waistband is nice, but is a pretty common feature now. only downside is that these shorts aren't well ventilated.honestly, i'm warm even if i'm only in chamois, so i don't htink it's a big issue. some more expensive shorts have extra ventilation though.

at the end of the day, these are good looking shorts that should last at least as long as your bike.

Great short, very tough, stretch cotton

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is my 3rd pair of Fox Sergeant mtb shorts. I tried other brands and styles but it seems that only fox can offer a stretchable heavy cotton fabric with a fit that can accomodate my big tights.
I just wish that Fox was more consistent with their sizes on ALL their products!

What is the removable square of grey cloth that clips in the left pocket for? It is described in the picture as chamois.

I called Foxhead and was told that the detachable piece of chamois in the pocket was for cleaning eyeglasses or protective goggles. I told them that the idea was a good one except when the cloth becomes wet with sweat, it looses its effectiveness. I suggested that they make the cloth into a pouch to hold keys since the upper pockets are made of mesh and sharp objects go through it and scratch your leg.

Responded on

it's geared more toward shuttle runs when you wouldn't be as hot.

hey, at least you got the lens wipe!

I like 'em

I have these in the "dark khaki" color.
The diamond print is a bit more defined in person than it appears online - which is fine - just a little unclear from the photos.
They seem to fit true to size and the material is stretchier than I expected, which is nice since I'm sort of between sizes.
My only complaint is the chamois could probably stand to be a little better padded.
Other than that, as the title says, I like 'em.

I bought two pair and went back and purchased another pair because they are well made. The material is thick enough to take a couple of falls and a lot of washings without falling apart. The lining is not the thickess, but I have linings made by other manufacturers that are thicker and they sometimes bunch up and cause chafing. You might say that they are a little expensive, but remember, you get what you pay for.
