Versatility matters.

Don't let the Ranger Cargos' mellow, off-trail presence mislead you, as Fox Racing's mountain-bike aptitude is abundant in these ride anything, ride anywhere shorts. From lush northern forests to desert singletrack, the Ranger Cargos' two-way stretch poly shell ensures cool, dry comfort and unlimited range of motion.

Out on the trail, Fox treats you to a six-panel, moisture-wicking, and breathable liner with Pro Form chamois, which provides not only support, but relief from irritation, too. The anatomic liner is detachable, allowing you to pair it with knickers and pants for cooler climates; and best of all, the Rangers turn into a pair of technical shorts for travels between trailheads.

As for storage space, the Ranger Cargos have plenty; this includes two pedal-friendly hand pockets for quick access to electronic devices, one zipped cargo for secure storage, and a flapped cargo for streamlined convenience to nutrition.

  • Versatile mountain bike shorts for any trail application
  • A chamois-equipped removable liner adds optional comfort
  • Multiple pockets for all manner of storage needs
  • Baggy cut accommodates knee padding

Don't need to think about them

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 34

Light and comfortable, good pockets, great price on sale. Fit seems true to size. Padded liner is so-so.

Nice shorts

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small

Just got them, one ride under my belt. Overall, these are nice shorts. They do run small though, usually a 34 waist, bought the 36 and they're snug.

Quality lacks

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 40" waist

I can compare only to the last pair of Fox MTB shorts purchased. These are smaller than the last which were the same size waist. The liner ,after a week of riding, show more wear than the other pair of Fox shorts I have been riding in over the past year! But the material used in my most recent purchase, theses Ranger Shots, has already snagged in the first week. Hence I. Comparing the past to the most recent QUALITY LACKS!!!

Great shorts!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 30

I read in the other reviews that these shorts run small so I purchased a Size 30 when I would normally get a 28. They fit perfectly, and the included velcro adjustment system is perfect for getting them to sit just right.

So far they perform exactly as you would expect from mountain bike shorts and chamois. The included chamois fit me perfectly thankfully, but there is certainly enough room to wear your own. They are very light and breath well, and there are enough pockets for all my important things. I would definitely buy another pair in the future.

didn't arrive in usable condition won't

  • Size Bought: x large

When the shorts arrived the top snap was missing. cost shipping to return won't be back to this site, no shorts=cost money

Great MTB short! Runs small!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 36

These have been great shorts so far, I haven't used the liner yet, I wear leggings for poison ivy and tick issues. Nonetheless, I ordered a 36. My pant size. They are like the MX pants. Go a size bigger. They do have some elastic in them. They break in, and move washes out easily!

Fits Small

  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 34

These were tiny. I've worn 34 pants most of my adult life and I could barely squeeze into them. Order a size or two up. Also, beware... there are no belt loops.

New design not as good

I was a fan of the Fox Ranger Cargo and I have of multiple pairs of the previous models. Bought a new pair and was dissatisfied with the new design. They no longer have a zip fly, belt loops are gone, and lastly Fox sizing seemed to change with these. These didn't seem true to size. Usually wear a 32 in fox shorts and these were too big. I am 6'-0", 170 lbs. I wasn't able to get a comfortable fit even with the internal adjusters. Returned these and got the Zoic Ether, which are my new favorite mtb shorts.

    Great Shorts

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: 32"

I bought 32" waist, and they seem a little more snug than 32" jeans. I like my riding shorts snug. The built in liner offers comfortable padding. Great shorts - I will probably buy a second pair in a different color.

    as usual terrible fox quality

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 34

These shorts could've been decent. The exterior shorts are ok but appear to have low quality stitching and construction, which isn't unexpected for the price. The external shorts would have been fine but don't seem very durable compared to other brands I've worn. The padded liner short looked ok but has a fatal flaw. The chamois has extremely sharp edges and chafes like no other bike shorts I've ever worn as soon as you put them on. I wasn't about to scratch up my entire back thigh and inner leg area to find out how they work in practice. I've owned a dozen bike shorts of medium to extremely high quality from many brands and these are the worst I've ever seen based on initial feel alone. I've had some other Fox soft goods before and was disappointed by their quality and durability and thus experience and my experience with some other Fox items in my order only reinforced that perception. I really wanted to keep this product because it was such a great deal but the liner pad just isn't constructed right. Even on another Fox model that was double the price there was sloppy stitching in one spot of the short that would have chafed my back unless I tucked a shirt into the liner.

    My favorite shorts

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Great shorts. Comfy, love the removable chamois, and I love the style. I like these a lot more than the regular ranger shorts. They run a tiny bit small, but not small enough to order a size up.

    Love em!

These come with a built in padded underwear liner / chamois which is awesome for the price point! Shorts are a vibrate green in colour, very comfortable, true to size and I am hoping very durable - Time will tell!! Overall an excellent mountain biking short thus far!!!

    These shorts are awesome!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

These shorts are very comfy. They fit true to size, color is bright, and they are very durable. They come with the padded underwear liner as well.

    Bought Two Pairs

Bought a pair of these and liked them enough that I picked up a second pair so I don't have to do laundry as often. They're comfortable and look great. For the price, love that they come with a well-padded chamois.

      I Love these Shorts!

These are my go to shirts on and off the trail! Very durable, stylish and lightweight. 12" inseam is not long, or too short, but just right. These are the only mtb shorts I wear...after I bought my first pair and ended up buying three more in other colors. Great shorts that are worth the price, especially when you can pick them up on sale at Backcountry!

Putting My Rangers To Use At Deer Valley

      Useful way beyond mtb'ing

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Fox Ranger 12" cargo shorts are my new favorite all-purpose mountain shorts.

I bought them for mtb'ing. For that they're great. But I've found they're super for most of my mountain activities.

The fabric is 4-way stretch, abrasion resistant to the point I'll call it durable, and quick to dry in warm, sunny weather. It also has a diamond plate-type pattern that IMO looks cooler than most smooth fabrics used in comparable shorts.

There's a removable liner with integrated padding for the sit bones. I haven't used it; I prefer lighter weight, although it's nice to have the option. Also, the fabric around the padding is like silk-weight Capilene, which breathes well and isn't overly constrictive.

Since these shorts were designed with mtb'ing in mind, the cargo pockets are easily accessible when in a riding position. I like the zipper pocket on one side and the hook and loop closing pocket on the other side. Again, options are nice to have. Plus there are two regular-depth front pockets off the waist, just like regular shorts.

While there are no belt loops, which I'd probably add in the next version, there are hook and loop tabs on the inside of the waistband about where one's hips are. I'd estimate 3 inches of adjustability in the waist, which makes these shorts versatile. For instance, I'll put 'em on over my cut-off TNF Polartec PowerStretch thermals on chilly days or go commando on those ultra hot days (yeah, TMI, I suppose), and the shorts stay on my hips.

I'm about a 31" waist. I have the 32" size. The waist fit is great, in light of the adjustability. The length hits at the kneecap.

I should've bought two pair, because I don't want to wear my other athletic shorts, except when I'm going running, in which case these are over-built. But, in fairness that's running isn't the intended application, mtb'ing is. Still, I've run miles in 'em, just gotta hike 'em up occasionally.

Score yourself some of the Fox Ranger cargo shorts and I bet you'll be stoked like I am.

Pic is from Ding & Dang Canyon in the Swell. In the pic, I'm also wearing a bunch of other softgoods I bought at TNF Reaxion Amp tank top, Ex Officio Give-N-Go boxer ( out of view : p ), Altra Superior 1.5 trail runners. and probably the Rip Curl trucker hat, too. All excellent. Thanks, Backcountry, for keeping me stylin' out there.
