When Formula redesigned its R1 Racing Brake for 2014, it made some pretty major changes to an already impressive system — the most significant of which was its introduction of Pull Master Cylinder Technology. Rather than stick with the tried-and-true push piston, Formula designed the R1 Racing with a piston that is pulled instead — a construction method which they say results in decreased friction and improved wear over time.
Another change to the R1 Racing is its weight. At a willowy 267g, the brakes were clearly developed with the XC racing set in mind, and Formula managed to reduce the weight without the use of any carbon. The lever blades also forgo carbon in favor of forged aluminum, and, according to Formula, aluminum was the only option due to space constraints — achieving a strong enough piston pivot with carbon construction was impossible.
Formula chose to move the pivot closer to the bar to improve reach for a wider range of riders, further complementing the brakes' compact, manageable size. Titanium hardware helps keep weight down without sacrificing durability, while a Kevlar coating further reinforces the hose. The only part of the brakes that didn't see modifications were the calipers, so expect the same design as seen on the R1 brakes, with a 22mm piston diameter.
