Item # FIZ002H

We’ve always loved Fizik’s saddles. The Italian manufacturer’s unconventional approach to design has always been much more than hype — our experience has been that it truly translates directly to performance, and it has changed our expectations for road and mountain saddles across the board. Fizik’s foray into shoes has been no less revolutionary, with landmark design and performance. With its R5 Uomo Boa Shoe, we can now add value to the list.

At the heart of the new shoe is the unbeatable precision of the Boa dial-in closure system. This closure system makes dialing a perfect fit easy, even if you need to make micro-adjustments on the fly. The R5 Uomo’s closure system starts with a conventional hook-and-loop strap close to the toe for near-infinite forefoot width control. Moving up the front of the foot, the Boa Cable dial-in closure system snakes its way through 4 separate anchor points for complete control all the way up to the tongue.

To further control slippage, Fizik has shaped the heel cup at the aft position of the shoe. This feature keeps the foot in the perfect position on hard up-strokes and while climbing out of the saddle. As a result, you're powering the pedals comfortably and efficiently. This has been further heightened by a variable stiffness sole construction. Underfoot, the R5 makes use of a carbon-reinforced nylon outsole. And while this keeps costs down, it doesn't inhibit either comfort or power transfer. In fact, the R5 retains a low stack height and a high level of rigidity. Fizik has also engineered-in trace flexibility, so the outsole drives power directly to the pedals while allowing enough movement to guarantee comfort after 80 kilometers.

And on the topic of comfort, Fizik went above and beyond to make the R5 extremely breathable. The R5 features Fizik's Microtex for the support structure of the uppers and nylon mesh for the ventilation windows. Together, these materials keep your feet breathing and comfortable on long summer days in the saddle. And for the insole, Fizik included its own Superlight Insole. And while its not custom moldable like with the R1, it does incorporate a thoughtful design that assures comfort by absorbing road vibration and supporting your arch system.

  • Boa closure system
  • Nylon-carbon composite sole

Perfect Fit!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 42.5

I've only had a change to wear these once but love them so far. they fit is perfect for me. I wear a 40 or 42.5 and these were spot on size wise. I felt they had more room in the toe box than giro. They look really really awesome and can't wait to log some miles with them!

Nice, but tight in the toe box

I love my Fizik saddles, so I decided to try the shoes, too. Overall, I'd say they are good shoes, especially at the sale price. Seem to be quite stiff for a carbon mix sole. Excellent quality from what I could tell. However, I found them to be way too tight in the toe box. After just about 20 miles, my toes & across the top of my foot started to hurt. I already had the velcro strap very loose, so I had to keep cranking the boa looser and looser... I wear a size 10 american, and 44.5 in both pearl izumi and shimano shoes without any such problem. I returned them, and am trying the R3B instead.

Nice, but tight in the toe box

$50 to fix?!?!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I have a great pair of Fizik shoes. i really do love them. But the heel pads fell off. (that's a sharp screw sticking out of the bottom of the shoe in the picture).

This seems to be a common issue, based on the number of internet hits. No problem, just order a replacement, right?

Well I couldn't find anyplace in the US to get the heel pads. So I went online and found a support center. They very kindly replied with a link to their website and, for $15, I could get a new pair of little pads.

Except shipping was, and I kid not, $35.

So a total of $50 for two tiny pieces of rubber. OUCH.

$50 to fix?!?!

Good choice for comfort and fit

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 13US

Being new to road cycling, I spent a lot of time researching shoes and doing my own study via different bike shops. I narrowed my choice down to two, Fizik and another manufacturer. I settled on the Fizik's because of the comfort and overall fit. I have no regrets with my decision. They are constructed well and provide the strength via the sole, I needed and wanted. Highly recommend Fizik's and Competitive Cyclist!

First pair of cycling shoes

I've been using these handsome shoes moderately for about four months, and both the heel pads have fallen off.

Really nice Shoes

  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 44

they are as in the picture, really nice and beautiful, the size is OK, I've ordered size 44, they came 43.5 but they fit OK.
Very confortable shoes in long rides.

Really nice!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 44.5 / 45

These are very pretty shoes that are clearly well made.

I am an 11.5 in New Balance running shoes, 11 in my Innov-8 weight lifting shoes. I tried 11 for these and my left foot was perfect, right foot was just a little too small and on rides over 30 miles my right foot would start to hurt quite a bit and my toes would curl up. That didn't happen with my current Vittoria shoes which are larger. I am exchanging the 44.5 for 45 just to get a touch more toe room in the right side.

For the price these are awesome imo. Buying shoes on the internet is hard if it's the first time with a particular brand.

Fits True to Size

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 45

I wear an 11 US street shoe and the 45 EURO was a tad too large. 44.5 EURO is perfect.

Like others said, they are a bit narrow, but that works perfect for me.

Super stiff. The BOA system is nice.

Fair Price and Great Comfort

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 42

I was back and forth between these shoes and the Mavic Zxellium. I went with the Fiziks because I prefer the boa closure system which makes for an easily achieved proper fit and adjustments on the move. Also for I heard the Mavics were overly stiff and I didn't want to pay 300+ dollars for a shoe. I wear a 9 and ordered a 42 which is slightly more narrow in the toe than I hoped but not enough to warrant a bigger size. These shoes have a sleek look, good fit, and a fair pricepoint, whats not to love.

Great Fit, Great Look!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 42.5

I previously wore a 43 in Specialized shoes, but after trying on some fi'zi:ks at a local shop, I decided 42.5 would be better. These fit perfectly. For the size, they are a bit narrower than my specialized shoe, which fits my foot very well. The look is unparalleled at this price. In white, they are the best looking shoes I've seen, in my opinion. At first, the tongue, which is short and a stiff combination of leather(ette?) and mesh, dug into the front of my ankle. The first couple rides were pretty painful and I started to develop a sore. By the third ride, the tongue had begun to soften and I don't even notice it anymore.

Fizik R5

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 45.5

very comfortable, extremely light and they look great. I wear a size 10.5 US so I went with a 45.5 and I recommend going to a shoe store and measuring your foot. I always thought I was a size 11. Make sure you check the size chart and if you have to call competitive cyclists I did and they were a lot of help. No complaints

Are they waterproof?

The outer sole is leather (or a leather-like) material with perforated holes covering almost the entire shoe. I would imagine during light rain/fog they'd be able to repel water ok, but not water proof when it's raining.

It's true...awesome.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I started road cycling just over 3 months ago and went with clips a month ago. I chose this pair of cycling shoes due to the overwhelmingly positive reviews (bikeradar, road, etc) about how comfortable they were.

They truly are VERY comfortable. I never wore cycling shoes and my initial thoughts were that they would be hard, shaped, inflexible, etc, but Fizik has a winner on their hands.

The ability to pop open the dial for an immediate release is ingenious. It makes taking them off effortless.

The styling of the white pair looks great and goes with every outfit color scheme.

They are very light, but do not feel flimsy or cheap. It's very solid. It's great Italian quality.

Some of the things I don't like are: (1) when very well tightened, the dial digs through into your feet. You will feel it and it's somewhat uncomfortable when riding. You get relief by loosening the dial a few clicks, but it might introduce a tiny bit more flex.

I typically wear size 42.5 US, so I purchased both the 42 and 42.5. My feet are slightly wider and the 42.5 provided the width I needed. The 42 was snug, but a little narrow.

Here's what's strange...the two pairs had slight differences and I bought them only two weeks apart. My 42 has a reflective heel stripe and a metal band on the toe velcro. The 42.5's heel stripe was not reflective. It was some faux leather and it was without the metal band on the velcro. I don't know if Fizik changed something or not, but I had a bad feeling the 42.5 I got could have been a counterfeit. The design seemed backwards. Maybe it was an older model...

Either way, great shoes! Buy it!

Great shoe, reasonable price!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I switched to this shoe from the Sidi Wire. I just found the Wire to be uncomfortable.

The R5B is a super comfortable shoe, and needed absolutely no break-in period! The boa system is easy to adjust, as you can turn the dial to tighten or loosen in small increments. And just pull the dial out to release. Sizing is spot on. I wear a size 11 street shoe, and bought the 46 in these. Perfect fit. The sole is not as stiff as carbon soles like on the Wire, but it is stiff enough to prevent comfort issues.

Bottom line is that I love these shoes, and would highly recommend giving them a try! My wife rides the same shoe, and loves them as much as I do.

Hi there! I am also thinking of switching from the Wire. Did you downsize a bit or you bought the same size as the Wire?
Thanks !!!

Same size, mir102429227. The Fizik may actually be just a tad bit more snug fitting.

I love these shoes

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These shoes are great... I commute at night, so its very important that the reflective part of the shoes works, and it does!

Super comfortable and reasonably priced. Highly recommend. Love the BOA

What! only $185 for these sweet bad boys. Still amazed by how sweet these bad boys are. Love these shoes, 2nd time Fizik shoe user, so stoked on the boa dial. Will be for sure getting the road r5 next. The m5 is light, fits like a glove and super durable.
