Italian perfection.

While Fi'zi:k has made quite a splash in the road bike market with its recent shoe offerings, you may not be familiar with its mountain bike footwear. Consider this your introduction. The Fi'zi:k M1 Shoes take the impeccable attention to detail that has popularized its road shoes, and applies it to a top-tier mountain shoe that's equally at home racing as it is on all-day trail rides.

Fi'zi:k built the uppers of the M1 shoes around a mix of nylon mesh and kangaroo leather. The nylon mesh handles ventilation duties, keeping your feet cool when you're working hard. Meanwhile, the kangaroo leather is applied in high-wear areas, such as the toe box and heel cup, because of its heightened sense of durability. And although it's a hard-wearing material, the kangaroo leather is quite supple and soft. It also breaks in beautifully, adding comfort to the requisite strength.

For maximizing your pedaling efficiency, it's essential that your shoes have a precise fit on your foot. To ensure this, Fi'zi:k employs three straps. All three are built out of durable sailcloth, which are cut wide in order to relieve pressure over your feet. The two foremost straps use a hook-and-loop closure for fine-tuned volume adjustment. And the strap nearest to your ankle attaches via a proprietary SL Micrometric ratcheting buckle. For added durability, Fi'zi:k constructed the SL buckle from aluminum. The straps compress a removable tongue. Why would you want a removable tongue? Well, not only does it provide extra room to customize the volume of the shoe, but it also makes cleaning the M1 a bit of an easier process.

Another key to maximizing your power transfer is a stiff, yet comfortable, carbon fiber outsole. The outsole is tuned to provide all of the rigidity that you need, while still providing enough flex to alleviate the pain that trail chatter inflicts on your feet. A Tepex heel cup is stiffer than the rest of the sole, which maintains the shape of your heel in order to relieve pressure. And despite its stiffness, the Tepex heel cup is designed to accommodate a wide range of foot shapes. Meanwhile, Fi'zi:k incorporated a flexible polyurethane Mobius Rail around the outside of the sole. Essentially, this provides added pressure relief and heel retention in order to further improve the highly customizable fit. And since no mountain shoe is complete without an off-road appropriate outsole, Fi'zi:k used rubber traction lugs for both their grip and durability.

And on the subject of the M1's comfort, Fi'zi:k has gone to another level with its 3D Flex Insole design. This insole is heat moldable and fully customizable for the three areas of the foot -- the longitudinal arch, metatarsal button, and the heel cup. To develop this, Fi'zi:k teamed up with Sidas Technologies of France for the design process, and three materials were decided upon. At the metatarsal and longitudinal arches, the insole features the Podiaflex material. Podiaflex was selected for the arch, because its highly moldable properties allow it to perfectly support and conform to your arches. To absorb road vibration and chatter, Fi'zi:k placed Ortholite along the pedal axle portion of the insole. This material is a low-rebound foam and has been cut to the average size of pedal. Having this in place nearly eliminates the numbness generated from long miles clipped-in on the road. Finally, encompassing the heel cup, we the solid and supportive, thermoplastic known as Transflux. Working as a system, we see that the 3D Flex design evenly distributes pressure on the foot, or as Fi'zi:k says, 'the insole is supportive, not corrective or obtrusive.'

The Fi'zi:k M1 Shoes are available in the color Black and in whole and half sizes from 40.0 to 48.0. Please go to Fi'zi:k's official website for instructions on how to mold the 3D Flex Insoles.

Here's what others have to say...

Very confortable

  • Gender:Male
  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

The Fizik show is very well made and looks great. I will compare it with the SIDI Drago because I have the boths and they have similar price! The Fizik is more roomy and confortable, but is a litle bit heavier. They have good rigidity and good Power transfer. The fabric of the SIDI is better to be used in a very hot days and when you are sure that your shoe will be wet , because the SIDIs fabric doesnt retain much humidity as the Fizik. I think that the SIDI is more race oriented, and the Fizik is more confortable.

Very confortable

Races, hike-a-bike, downhill

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

I ride everyday and wanted a shoe that was comfortable, stiff and most of all light. This has fit all the criteria. Has been the best fitting shoe that I've owned. I've ridden it high in the mountains on downhill my bike shouldn't be ridden on (Anthem) without missing a beat. The stiff bottom shoe was noticeable the day I put them on. They also don't look too bad either and if you road bike like me, you can get the matching road version and be the coolest kid on the block!

Fizik M1 MTB Shoes

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I purchased these shoes February 2014. I have worn Sidi for motorcycle racing and all my bike racing and have ALWAYS been happy with the shoes and could justify the price paid vs the quality I was getting. The construction of these Fizik M1 shoes seem to be on par with my top notch Sidi. I really like the kangaroo leather inners, & moldable 3D Flex Insoles. As with the Sidi the M1 treads are replaceable & all the straps & buckles. The M1 seem extremely stiff and the tongue of the shoes is removable and can be placed where you find it most comfortable... I would recommend if you are running CrankBros cleats to make sure and get the Crankbrothers Shoe Shields as the plastic plates that come with the cleats are not large enough to cover the mounting bolts. The M1 are very well made and I believe I will be extremely happy with them and look forward to putting big miles under them.
