Fi'zi:k Arione R5 Saddle $170.00
Made for those who slither
The Spine Concept Fit System is Fi'zi:k's method of ensuring you choose a saddle that is designed for the way you position yourself on a bike. It realizes that cyclists are not all bendy-straws, and that different degrees of flexibility affect riding behavior, as well as comfort. It uses three animals to describe the levels of flex: from most to least flexible are snake, chameleon, and bull. The Arione R5 saddle is specifically designed for the snake.
What makes the Arione snake-worthy? To begin with, it is a full 300mm long, and flat. Constructed from a Nylon Carbon Thermoplastic Composite, the shell is stiff and light. Additionally it features Fi'zi:k's Wingflex technology. This allows the outside of the saddle to flex when pedaling, while the top of the saddle remains stiff and supportive. It minimizes chafing on legs and helps to direct power to the pedals rather than into the saddle. The 132mm width of the paddle provides ample support for sit bones. The entire length of the saddle has been covered with microtex, a durable fabric that resists wear and tear and will not abrade your expensive cycling shorts.
What makes the Arione R5 different from the other Arione saddles offered by Fi'zi:k? Well, besides the nylon shell verses a composite glass or carbon shell, the R5 is constructed using K:ium rails. K:ium (pronounced "koom") rails are about 8% lighter than titanium rails and more durable. They feature silicium and chrome which not only have better vibration-absorption qualities, they are also corrosion resistant.
The Fi'zi:k Arione R5 Saddle is available in one size: 100mm by 132mm and it weighs 220grams. It comes in the colors Black/black and Red/white.

For the black/black saddle... is the black...
For the black/black saddle... is the black strip down the center smooth or the suede material?
The center on the black/black is an ultra suede finish or a matte texture but very smooth.
Hi Greg, thanks for your reply. The reason I ask is because previously I had the regular arione with kium rails which had the suede center strip down the middle and I did not like the grippy texture of the suede. Was wondering if this R5 version is the same?

- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Over the years I have ridden many varieties of saddles from Fizik and many other companies as preferences and sponsorships have changed. For the first time in many years I'm in the position to choose my own saddle, and this one has blown me away. It has the same feel as the high-performance Arionne we have been familiar with for years, with just a little extra padding for added comfort during long days in the saddle. Previously I'd steer clear of saddles with padding because that is normally a recipe for trouble but this one changes that entirely. You won't be disappointed with this one.
