Groovy.

Compared to the more race-oriented saddles like the Volta and Arione, Fizik's Antares VS Saddle has a bit more cushion. That also comes with a slight weight penalty compared to its more minimalist stablemates, so ascetic climbers and gram counters may not be in to the Antares. If, however, you're after a ride that sacrifices some tech sheet bling in favor of long term durability and everyman comfort, then you may find that the Antares VS is a groovy alternative to the race-oriented boards that pass for saddles on superlight bikes.

Groovy isn't just an anachronistic descriptor in this case, either; one of the Antares VS's key features is the recessed relief channel running from bow to stern. While some of us find that less forgiving saddles with cut-outs or channels tend to focus pressure too much on very small points, the softer Antares manages to conform more to a cyclist's sit platform, keeping weight distribution more even while the high-gloss thigh glides ensure that expanded support doesn't hamper pedaling.

The nylon shell is reinforced with carbon fiber, so — like the padding — it offers a little more give than Fizik's top-end race kit, but it doesn't produce a bounce-down-the-road trampoline effect. The rails are made of Fizik's go to choices: Kium or carbon fiber. Kium is a proprietary, chromium-finished alloy that enjoys a claimed 8% reduction in weight compared with titanium. Kium isn't quite as light as carbon, but it also doesn't require a $200 torque wrench to adjust your saddle position for fear of crushing the rails. Carbon is the wonder material you know and love: stiff, damping, and low weight. The Antares VS is finished with a microtex cover whose fashionably subtle looks are equal to the abuse of training, 'cross, or the daily commute.
