Don't bully your bottom.

We can think of two reasons why few saddles on the market enjoy such a devoted following among our riding set as the Fizik Aliante R3 Kium Saddle. First, it satisfies our secret weight weenie and not-so-secret frugal streak by putting a sub-230 gram saddle into the self-sponsored cyclist's range. Second, it's just damn comfortable for anything from criteriums to sportives.

The saddle's body is built on a TwinFlex foundation, which uses a stiff outline for support, with a more forgiving interior to provide cushion for your perineum. The R3's TwinFlex body is made from nylon and glass fibers as opposed to the R1, which infuses the nylon with lighter carbon instead of glass. In Fizik's Linnaean estimation of cyclists-as-animals, the Aliante is for bulls. Bulls are less flexible and rotate their pelvises forward when they ride, an adjustment that requires a saddle with a larger, deeper pocket — but, truth be told, we know many cyclists who can touch their foreheads to their knees but still prefer the Aliante.

The R1's carbon rails are also lighter than the R3's Kium, but when it comes to reliability vs. weight vs. price, we're happy to stand by — or rather, sit on Kium. Kium is a lightweight, strong alloy that incorporates silicone, a tubular body, and a jealously guarded proprietary finishing process that involves chromium to produce a rail that's as durable as it is aesthetically pleasing — all while enjoying a claimed 8% reduction in weight over solid titanium. The black microtex cover caps the Aliante off with a durable, attractive skin.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I'm somewhat of a novice cyclist and this is actually my first non-stock saddle so I can't really get too technical. All I can say is that my derriere thanks me for making the upgrade. And by "thanks" I mean it doesn't scream at me after (or during) my typical 5-10 mile ride. Looks pretty slick on my bike, too.

roduct Review: fi’zi:k Aliante R3 K:ium

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

My name is Wesley Eslick, I am a 20 year old South African riding on the Team in California, USA.

I have been fortunate enough to ride the new fi’zi:k Aliante R3 K:ium saddle for 2015. It’s Italian look as well as it’s non slip patch which sits towards the back of the saddle has made for a really comfortable ride and sleek design not to mention.

The fi’zi:k Aliante R3 K:ium comes in at a very light weight of 220 grams and it’s TWIN FLEX ™ Carbon Kevlar shell makes it a saddle for any level of rider and not just something for the pro’s. It’s stylish look will complement any bike no matter the color. The big advantage of the saddle is the shape allows you to move around as the road changes to fit your own personal riding style.

If you are looking to get a new saddle for your bike then the fi’zi:k Aliante R3 K:ium might just be the right saddle for you!
