When your downhill shoe was designed with input from Greg Minnaar, 17-time World Champion, you know that it's more than just good looks. With it's makeover, you'll be sure to notice the sleeker styling of the Impact VXi Clipless shoes, but it'll be their performance that entices you to add them to your shoe collection.

"VXi" is short for Five Ten Innovations, and the shoes that feature this designation are its no-holds barred, top tier models. To that end, the Impact features Five Ten's proprietary Mi6 rubber. And if Mi6 sounds familiar, think England. This exclusive rubber compound is the stuff of movie magic and has been used to allow actors and stunt-performers to run on slippery surfaces such as glass. So, you can be assured of a secure grip no matter what your pedal platform has been molded from. Mi6 also provides better cushioning than the previous version's sole—it helps to absorb impact and filter out vibrations from rough trails. The midsole was constructed from EVA for support and comfort.

In addition to the super-secret sole, the redesigned Impacts are lighter with better toe protection. Hydrophoic foam was used throughout the shoes which allows them to dry fast, a property welcomed by riders in wetter climates. And, to keep them on your feet, even in mud, the shoes are laced with a hook and loop strap over the top to provide additional security.

The Five Ten VXi Clipless shoes are compatible with SPD-styled cleats. The cleat placement is further back than a cross-country styled shoe which affords riders who are accustomed to platform pedals a similar foot position. They are available in whole and half sizes from 6.0 to 12.5 and in whole sizes 13.0 and 14.0. They come in two colors: Minnaar Rasta and Team Black.

  • Mi6 rubber sole
  • Synthetic upper
  • Hydrophobic foam lining
  • EVA midsole
  • Lace closure with hook-and-loop strap
  • 2-holt MTB cleats

Powerful and supportive

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 6.5

I bought these shoes to replace an older pair of the Greg Minnaar Five Tens that I had worn through. I had loved the comfort and how it interfaced with my Crank Brother Mallet 3 pedals. I wore a 6.5 in the old version, so ordered the same size in the Impact. Upon receiving them, I found them to run slightly smaller then my previous pair. It was on my right foot that it felt small. Putting the old shoe and the new shoe sole together, it looks like the Impact was a little shorter then the previous version. Overall the fit was more snug and supportive, which I very much enjoyed immediately on my first rides with them. I like the larger velcro strap and the sole grips my Mallet Enduro pedals like none other. I was a little nervous about the Rasta color way, but loved it in person, and it was not too over the top. The arch support is much better in the Impact, and after having several rocks deflect off the shoe, I can attest that the toe box is bomber and offers excellent protection from erroneous rocks flying at your feet.

Great all around shoe!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 12

I have used these a few times now and have been seriously impressed. I have been riding a stiff carbon fiber soled xc style shoe for years and wanted something that was more walk-able. This shoe is super comfortable while walking, and maintains a stiff platform for pedaling. I would recommend this shoe to anyone looking for a more sneaker/skate style shoe with a clipless feature. I wear a street shoe size 12, and have worn other 46 size shoes; I find these fit fairly true to size at 12.

Bomber

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 6.0

When it comes to the best in cycling footwear 5.10 is at the top whether on flats or clips. These are no exception.

I bought them for downhill riding because they are grippy, comfortable and have bomber toe protection. There is rubber wrapped around the toe box providing extra protection from flying rocks, debris or for the occasional friend.

I did find they take about a week to break in. The rubber is pretty thick and my feet are just wide enough that they felt a little pinched around the ball of the foot area on the first few uses. But once they broke in they were extremely comfortable and easy to hike in.

I found they fit true to size. I am a US women's 7.5/8, UK5 and the US men's 6 fit perfect.

I have these in the rasta and team colorways and love them!

Nice Shoe

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 7.5

This is my first clipless shoe and so far I like them a lot. For the record, this is a very wide shoe for sure, which is good for me. I can rarely find shoes of any type wide enough for me because I wear a size 7.5 and have very wide feet. These are plenty roomy for me in the forefoot and toe box, so much so that I could probably have sized down a half size because there is plenty of room for your outside toes. This makes for a comfortable shoe for me but people with narrow feet might not like the play when unclipping.

They have a rigid sole compared to the sneakers I was wearing before, which feels more efficient, but still feel good to walk on trails in. I can get them very tight with the strap across the top so that they feel good when pulling up on the pedal. Construction seems very solid with plenty of rubber on the front and sides to protect the toes and shrug off impacts. They also seem nicely water resistant; I can just hose off the mud on the upper after a ride without saturating them.

There is a few degrees of the pedal stroke where they don't want to unclip because the beefy toe area hits my crank arm, though I don't think this is too big of a deal.

Sizing

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs large

I tried these on to compare to other clipless mtn bike shoes. First thing I notices is that these are WIDE. I felt like it was a very sloppy fit, and they felt a little long. Mostly I was surprised by the width. I typically wear a medium D last width, and I was comparing these to the Giro Chamber (size 44) and the Mavic Alpine XL (size 10.5) both were not nearly as wide and fit my foot better than the Impact VXi.

The 3 star rating is for the fit, not the performance, the Stealth rubber is very sticky and the construction seem to be bomber. Had these fit my foot better I would have chosen them. These would be a great choice for someone who needs an E last.

Amazing

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 10

Okay, after riding these shoes a bunch I highly recommend them. Man, do they put the power to the pedals. You can attach your clips much farther back on the platform than my Shimano AM45's, which really gives you amazing power uphill. More like a platform. Your quads are much more engaged and your calfs don't blow up. My bike felt like it was climbing by itself. On the way down having the clips father back is really nice for long descents and you can really put the power to the ground and dig in while cornering. Size is true to fit. They are also way lighter than the Shimano AM45 and much stiffer. Not that this matters, but they look really sweet too!!!

I didn't think a shoe made that big of a difference...man I was wrong. Spend the extra money...it's well worth it!!!

Initial out of the box review

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 10

Banger, I put these bad boys on my feet and was blown away!!! They are super stylish, very comfortable, and incredibly light compared to my Shimanos. I found these shoes to be just a tick bigger than true to size...if that makes any sense. They are def not narrow, as I have a decently wide foot. I feels has nice arch support and feels like a nice stiff platform to rip with.

Not comfortable

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small

I ordered a pair of these, and ended up sending them back. They were too narrow and they didn't cradle my foot very well. I was really disappointed, because I love my 510 freerider XVIs and I thought these would fit similarly.
