Description

Max power.

When it comes to 24-hour racing, lighting is one of the most important aspects. The wrong setup can cause fatigue not just to the body, but to the eyes as well. When you match the 1600 Lumen MaXx-D Mk5 with an 1100 Lumen Diablo helmet light, the combination offers very low weight to thwart physical fatigue -- and the combined beam pattern will help reduce eye strain.

But, the MaXx-D is powerful enough to use alone. Its aerospace grade, exquisitely CNC'd aluminum body mounts to your handlebars via a small, but sturdy CNC-machined aluminum clamp assembly for 31.8mm bars, and it includes a shim for 25.4mm bars. The clamp features a spring loaded button that holds it securely for trail use or over broken pavement. When you need to remove the light for charging you simply pull the red button and the lamp unit slides right out

That CNC'd aluminum body isn't just for high-end looks, though. It's actually designed to help heat transfer -- to physically cool the light. Packing four Cree XPG R5 LED's, the MaXx-D Mk5 can get toasty. One way the heat buildup is managed is through the body; the other way it's managed is with Exposure's patented Intelligent Thermal Management (ITM).

If the internal temperature gets too high, ITM kicks in and automatically drops the power level down to the next lowest setting. It will remain at the lower setting until the temperature inside the housing returns to normal operating range. This, and the weatherproof aluminum housing with O-ring seals, ensure the light's 11600mAh battery and LED bulbs are safe from moisture, muck, and heat for a long life span.

A defining feature found here on the MaXx-D Mk5 is Exposure's Smart Port Technology Plus. Essentially, it's a cylindrical plug on the back of the lamp unit that allows you to insert the smart charger. But it also enables you to plug in accessories like a red LED tail light and back-up batteries, or to charge other USB-powered devices. It will automatically recognize each accessory and configure the system to take a charge or power accessory lights. Best of all, a remote switch is available for quick light control.

As one of Exposure's long running, premium, race focused models, the MaXx-D Mk5 has consistently evolved and helped establish Exposure's market-leading expertise. One such advancement this year, aside from the 25% brightness increase, is the introduction of Exposures Optimum Mode Selector. OMS offers eight pre-programmed settings to provide the optimal lighting for ride conditions.

After all, the requirements needed for a solo or team 24-hour race are quite different -- and OMS lets you tune the light for any of those conditions. For example; in the first OMS setting, the MaXx-D Mk5 will push 1600 Lumens for 2hrs in high, medium gets you 6hrs at 780 Lumens, and low nets 430 Lumens at 12 hours -- great for putting in fast-paced team night laps.

Now, let's say you're going ride through the night on a solo mission. For that situation you can select the third OMS mode where the MaXx-D Mk5 will kick out a sufficient 1120 Lumen for 4hrs on high, 430 Lumens for 6hrs in medium, and 160 Lumens for 36hrs. That'd be plenty of light to safely cut through the darkness without having to pit.

The OMS modes are selected using the power button located on the back of the unit. The new info display resides under a clear silicone covering with eight LED's that double as the OMS display indicator and a fuel gauge. The top five LED's indicate fuel level, while the lower three let you know whether you're in high, medium, or low.

The Exposure MaXx-D Mk5 has a two year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship

Does it come with an adapter to mount it on the bike?

Responded on

Yes there is a handlebar mount (at least when you by it from Exposure) in the nice box it comes with. You can buy extra mounts (from Exposure) to mount the light onto other bikes you might ride in the dark. That's the beauty of this light..., it's portability and ease of recharging off the bike..., that and the fact that it is joyously bright. I've had drivers flash their high beams at me when I've had it on the high setting. I routinely ride at 20 mph and don't override the light.
