The fact that you can attach the 550-lumen Axis Single XML Light to your helmet, complete with battery, in a sub 100 gram package is pretty impressive to say the least. Exposure's makes this possible through the use of LED technology, a 2900mAh lithium ion battery (good for 2 - 36 hours), and extensive engineering.

This includes collimated Lens Technology, a high-tech resin lenses that's specifically designed to maximize light collection from the Cree XML white LED. It then projects the beam in an optimum pattern, ensuring no light is wasted. Housing the lens, bulb and battery is a one-piece aerospace grade, exquisitely CNC'd aluminum body.

The extensive machining, however, isn't just to look cool. It's actually designed to help heat transfer and physically cool the light. Packing one Cree XLM white LED, the Axis can generate excessive heat. One way it's managed is through the weather-tight body, the other way it's managed is with Exposure's patented Intelligent Thermal Management (ITM).

If the internal temperature gets too high, ITM kicks in and automatically drops the power level down to the next lowest setting. It will remain at the lower setting until the temperature inside the housing returns within normal operating range. This, and the weatherproof housing, ensures the light's battery and LED bulbs are safe from moisture, muck, and heat for a long life span.

Another feature found on the Axis XLM is Exposure's Optimum Mode Selector. OMS offers preprogramed settings to provide the optimum lighting for ride conditions. The OMS modes are selected using the power button located on the back of the unit, and an info display resides under a clear silicone covering with 3 color mode LED's that double as the OMS display indicator and a fuel gauge.

Exposures' Axis Single XML Light comes with both wall and USB chargers and an easy to use, lightweight helmet mount.

Tiny and powerful

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Beautifully made, as light weight as advertised, very bright, nice beam pattern. The basic issue is whether for the high cost it gives enough light or if you should get the Diablo (or similar higher-output light) instead, perhaps with a back-up battery since the Diablo burns through battery life really fast. This has much better battery life, perhaps since it is a single LED v. 3 LED's for Diablo. I tend to think that most folks will want more light or settle for a bit less light at a far lower cost from one of the very nice 2014 lights from various brands that are coming out. Also, the "flash" setting is fairly ineffective - it only "blips" slightly so is just not very noticeable as a daytime warning light. The $79 Tracer is actually far more effective for that. Bottom line - a great light with a very narrow niche.
