Depart.

With a 27.5-inch diameter and a full carbon rim, ENVE's 27.5 AM Carbon Chris King Wheelset represents two distinct departures from your traditional mountain kit. 27.5 is fast becoming the new standard for its ability to alternately navigate through terrain or roll roughshod over it, and ENVE's proprietary molding techniques have pushed carbon rims beyond the realm of lightweight, failure-prone fun stoppers to lightweight enablers with higher wheel tension and a stiff platform for power transfer and steering precision that aluminum rims can only dream of.

The AM Wheelset's titular initialism indicates its use for all-mountain applications. Though they rival the weight of most aluminum XC wheels, they are a bit heavier than ENVE's lightest carbon rims — but that extra girth means they're able to stand up to aggressive trail riding. This durability begins from the inside out with ENVE's internal bladder system, which increases the formative elements of heat and pressure while molding the rims. It also packs the layers tighter and eliminates material imperfections like uneven carbon build-up and resin pooling that can compromise structural integrity and add unnecessary weight. After curing, the bladders are removed for yet more weight savings.

ENVE's molding process creates the wheels in their final iteration — spoke holes, valve stem openings, and all — with no need for post-cure drilling, bonding, or machining. This results in less chance of structural weakness being introduced in the finishing steps and it also makes for continuous, uninterrupted wrapping of the carbon across the wheels' breadth. Continuous fibers forgo joints for a stronger rim, which in turn nets higher spoke tension and a stiffer, more efficient pedaling platform.

By incorporating Chris King hubs in the wheels, ENVE ensures that there are virtually no weak links here. All Chris King, including seals and bearings, are made in-house in Portland to industry-beating standards, and they're known for lasting years upon years without service. The rear hub's 72 (yes, seventy two) points of engagement give the freehub body the fastest response of any hub on the market, producing the angry bee sound that the hubs are known for. It's designed to withstand a consistent 800 ft/lbs of torque — quadruple what most hubs are even tested to — and downright ridiculous when you consider that an Olympic-level track sprinter at peak power can put out around 150 ft/lbs. Like the rims themselves, these hubs are built to accompany you to your limits, and beyond.
