Making a legend even more legendary.

Aerodynamics engineering legend Simon Smart and ENVE Composites set out to create the most efficient wheelsets available. To do so, not only was the manufacturing done directly across from the engineering office, ensuring constant testing and attention to detail, but specific criteria were introduced. First and foremost were durability and a stellar strength-to-weight ratio. From there, aerodynamic stability and minimal drag were introduced to complete the perfect circle. The ENVE Smart System 3.4 Disc Clincher Wheelset is the manifestation of this collaboration.

The ENVE Smart System 3.4 Disc Clincher is part of the SES series. ENVE used its most sophisticated technology and engineering techniques to create this fast, stiff, and aerodynamic wheelset. The 3.4's aerodynamic design starts with the size differential of the wheels. ENVE accounted for the different behaviors of front and rear wheels, and designed the 3.4s with the front wheel that's 35mm deep and 26mm wide, while the rear wheel is 45mm deep and 24mm wide. The front wheel's shallow profile and wide stance helps decrease drag in windy conditions. On the other hand, the rear wheel's depth decreases drag because stability is less affected at the aft position of the bike. According to ENVE, the 3.4s create a low drag number rivaling many competitors' 50mm- and 60mm-depth wheels.

One of the most noticeable advantages of the 3.4 carbon clincher wheelset is its enhanced stability. The 3.4 demonstrates stellar results under the ENVE Stability Index, a series of tests that incorporates the measurement of transient aerodynamics. The test represents real-world conditions, and ENVE is one of the only non-Formula One manufacturers to conduct it. The 3.4 shape that was developed as a result of these tests ensures predictable airflow attachment over the rim, regardless of crosswind; In a crosswind, the 3.4 experiences a buildup of side-force equal to the changing angle of the wind, and the predictability prevents the need for rider over-correction.

The Smart System 3.4 Disc Clincher is also light, stiff, and strong. The ENVE SES series boasts the highest strength-to-weight ratio on the market, and it's due in part to ENVE's patented process of molding in spoke holes, nipple seats, and valve stem holes. Knowing that carbon fiber gains strength from continuous fibers, ENVE routes the fibers around each hole in a 100% intact design. This design allows a lower weight at the spoke face, and adds overall rigidity to the rim. ENVE also removes the rim-shaping inflatable bladder in the rim — this time-consuming process reduces rim weight and makes for a perfectly tensioned wheel build. Additionally, the strength of the wheel is perfectly suited for disc brakes, making these an ideal cyclocross or gravel road race wheelset.

The ENVE Smart System 3.4 Disc Wheelset - Clincher is available with a Campagnolo- compatible 11-speed freehub.

What's the future compatibility of the DT Swiss 240 with thru axles? My current bike is QR, but what if I upgrade to one with thru axles? Can I just swap out the end caps? If yes, will it also work with 15mm axles?

Dt swiss is the most compatible hubs you can buy. You can easily swap out end caps for $40 to pretty much any road and mountain standard outside of boost.

With the use of tubeless rim tape is there any problem running these wheels with tubeless tires?

Hey Chad,

You should not have an issue running the ENVE Smart System 3.4s tubeless with the addition of some tubeless rim tape. Feel free to contact me directly with any more questions about ENVE Wheels or if you are interested in setting up an order.

Stability and Extra Speed

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have been riding a Pinarello Dogma Hydro (disc brake version) for the last year with a Zipp Firecrest 303 disc wheelset. What I realized early on when riding on windy days that I was being blown around on the road. Kind of scary on fast descents! I wasn't sure if it was the windage caused by having disc brakes or it was the deep dish wheels. A few times the wind almost caused me to have a serious accident. So this caused me to start looking for possible ways to solve this problem. As luck may have it, I came across the ENVE Smart System 3.4 Disc Wheelset . Based on the product description and after talking to Competitive I decided though very pricey to take a chance and went ahead and purchased the wheelset. After two rides I can say that the stability is incredible in windy conditions. No more being blow around! Also to my amazement I actually picked up an extra 1 mp/h of speed due to reduced drag which I was not expecting. I thought at first this increase in speed was an anomaly so I decided to ride the exact route twice and then compare the results with previous recent rides of the same route while using the Zipp Firecrests. All data was collected using a Garmin 810 computer. The results was a 1 MPH increase.

The final analysis: VERY STABLE AND VERY FAST!

Quality: My rear wheel on the first wheelset was not true. I sent the whole set back to Competitive and they quickly replaced with a new one. I think the quality otherwise is very high.

To complete the set you might consider the following:

Clinchers:

Vittoria Open Pave EVO CG III, Black/Green, 700c x 25mm

Tubes:

Vittoria Latex Road Tube, size: 700x25/28

Disc Rotors:

Shimano XTR SM-RT99 Rotor - Centerlock SM-RT99, 140mm

Note: See my review on TRP/HYRD disc brakes and what you need to do to eliminate brake squeal and get maximum braking power.

Stability and Extra Speed

I have the Firecrest 303's on my Colnago CX Zero Disc and am looking at the Enve 3.4's. Feel any weight difference in them? What is the total weight of your Dogma Hydro? Still contemplating the extra weight for disc brakes.
