Description

Get smart.

If you're a racer on a budget, the one place you shouldn't skimp is on the rolling stock. Top quality wheels make a huge and noticeable difference in performance and ride quality. And if you are looking for a top flight pair of tubular racing wheels, then consider the Smart Enve System 3.4 Carbon Tubular Wheelset.

Designed to hit all the right numbers for the holy trinity of aerodynamics, stability and lightness, the 3.4 Tubular Wheels are ideal as your everyday and your race day wheels. While deeper-section wheels can be faster, they often get pitched about in heavy crosswinds. These Enve 3.4 wheels are easier to handle and potentially safer on blustery days. Low drag numbers and confidence-inspiring stability mean that you won't have to worry about being swept off the road in Jan Ullrich Lightweight fashion circa the 2004 Tour de France.

Enve and Simon Smart have managed this by developing a method by which they could measure steering torque in response to crosswinds. You can see the results in the shape and size of each rim, they're optimized for their front or rear applications -- the front rim has a depth of 35mm and a width of 26mm to increase stability while the rear rim has a depth of 45mm and a width of 24mm to reduce drag since stability is less of an issue. This combo is fast and predictable in real-wind situations. That you can count on their stability might save your time trial or your life if you happen to be riding on the shoulder of a wind-swept state highway.

While the 3.4 Wheels are aerodynamically efficient, they're the 'climbing' wheels in the Smart Enve System collection. They're breathtakingly light; the rims are a baby-bird-feathery 340g in the front and 380g in the rear. These wheels together will weigh less than one filled water bottle. If you've considered your Ksyriums your climbing wheels, you will experience an epiphany on your first foray into the mountains. It will become clear why professionals use wheels like these day after day in the hills. Anyone with wheels this light and predictable will have an immediate advantage over his or her more conventionally equipped opponents.

The spoke count has a lot to do with the light weight. There are only 20 in the front and the 24 in the rear. However, this doesn't mean that the 3.4 Wheels can't handle the abuses of rough roads. That's because Enve employs a patented process by which they mold the spoke hole into the laminate. This reduces the possibility of the spokes pulling through the rim, and they don't have to reinforce the areas with superfluous material. The high pressure molding makes the wheels light and strong.

With the Smart Enve System 3.4 Carbon Tubular Wheelset, the company based in Utah has set out to create the best pair of all-round wheels in the world. This is elite-luxury intended for everyone. They're built with Sapim CX Ray stainless steel spokes and DT Swiss 240 hubs. Enve recommends the use of their Grey Carbon Brake Pads to gain the best braking performance. There is no rider weight limit for any Enve wheelset. Choose Shimano/SRAM or Campagnolo cassette compatability.

Note: The rims are covered under the 5 year manufacturer warranty. The hubs and spokes are not covered under the ENVE warranty. We are only able to ship to this product to addresses within the United States.

Stealth Bomber

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

As a Competitive Cyclist employee and bike racer, every opportunity to ride the Enve Smart System 3.4's is a real treat.

ENVE has put plenty of technical expertise and top quality materials to produce these wheels. Our write-up does a great job at diving into this tech, but for the simple minded (like me) I'll stick to how they actually ride.

The Smart System 3.4 has simply found rolling Nirvana: Stiff, agile and responsive under power, robust and stable at any speed or wind condition, and oh so quiet as they barely make a noise. Any ride on this wheelset is a tranquil endeavor. Braking surface combined with Enve's own brake pads is reliable, even in the rain, especially relative to other carbon braking surfaces I've been on the past. You'll also appreciate the 220g saved, and even greater road intimacy you'll find with the Tubular version.

This is certainly not a budget wheelset, but you're getting an absolutely premium cream-of-the crop product any time you purchase ENVE.

Best Wheels I've Ridden

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Biggest "splurge" purchase on cycling to date. Wanted a good wheel set that was as good aerodynamically as it was climbing the canyons in SLC. These hit the mark perfectly. Super stiff and responsive, great in any winds, & fantastic bombing downhill. Love every aspect… makes an old Tarmac look sexy. Just wish I would've got them earlier in the season!
