Bright idea.

When designing the Epiphany C XC 275 XT Complete Mountain Bike, Ellsworth's brilliant idea was that there's absolutely no reason why enduro functionality should preclude cross-country weight and speed. The California-based manufacturer combines a carbon layup that strategically satisfies weight and energy transfer requirements while hitting the all-mountain sweet spot of 5.5 inches of travel. Though it self-styles as an XC machine, we find that the Epiphany's ride to be most inspiring for trail and enduro.

The main difference between the XC and enduro models of the Epiphany lies in the head tube, with the XC going to a steeper 70° angle that takes advantage of the tapered head tube and 140mm of rear travel for cross-country speed that can approach technical trail sections with nimble agility or reckless abandon. In the rear triangle, the addition of CNC machined aluminum rockers and chainstays makes for an even stiffer drivetrain, and the single 12 millimeter bolt needed for each pivot assemblage makes for a lighter, less complicated system.

Ellsworth claims that the Epiphany's Instant Center Tracking (ICT) suspension is the most advanced suspension platform in the world. As it moves through travel, ICT keeps the instant center (or virtual pivot created by ICT's four bar suspension) as close to the chain force line as possible. In on-trail terms, this maintains a steady pedaling platform so your power is always transferring into forward motion instead of lost to those two suspension gremlins, forward Jack and vertical Bob.

Furthermore, ICT doesn't require a lock-out, so you can always keep the FOX Float CTD shock's travel fully active, even while climbing. The addition of chain torque doesn't constrain the system's travel, the Achilles heel of so many otherwise efficient suspension designs, so pedaling and bump compliance aren't working against each other. The end result of ICT is a plush, less-fatiguing ride with greater control and responsiveness over all terrain.

The front end handles enduro furniture with a FOX Float 34 fork whose 150mm of travel and Kashima coating keep you in control. The bike is built-up with a full complement of Shimano XT, including the Shadow Plus rear derailleur, which is a low-profile chain nanny that prevents dropped and slapping chains while staying out of harm's way.
