While we appreciate any trainer that helps us feel like we're not "training" on a stationary bike indoors, the most high-tech ones can sometimes be a little much. We like the simple stuff, too, and for a relatively elemental trainer that's well-made and still packs enough tech to keep you challenged this winter, the Elite Qubo Hydromag Trainer is hard to beat.

The Hydromag is a non-electric unit, so unlike most digital trainers, it doesn't need to be plugged in. The full-steel frame is foldable, so it can be stored under a bed or in a closet if necessary. The stand can accommodate 20-29" wheels, and the 8-position adjustable hydro-magnetic resistance unit (the industry's first to combine the advantages of fluid and magnetic trainers) can provide up to 900 watts of resistance on a curved progression that simulates wind resistance, unlike linear-resistance trainers whose resistance is independent of wheel speed. The soft elastomer roller provides the dual benefits of reduced noise and increased tire life, and the dynamic Compass System frame moves to simulate the leaning and movement of a bike on a real road.
