Kiddo Approved, Mostly

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

With three kids, we go through cups like you wouldn't believe in my house. Anytime the kids wanted a drink of water they would get a new sippy cup out of the drawer, fill it up, and leave it half-full on the counter. By the end of the day we would have a dishwasher's worth of cups sitting on every surface in the kitchen. Now each kid has their own Eco Vessel bottle that they use throughout the day, and our dishwasher is less full.

A few notes:

* These are single-wall bottles, which means they sweat like crazy if you put ice inside; consider training the kids to use a coaster if you have wood tables

* The stainless gets pretty cold with a few ice cubes, which makes it uncomfortable to hold; my 8yo has taken to using a beer coozie with her bottle (note to self: buy a kid-friendly coozie that's not advertising beer or alcohol)

* The label insert says these are handwash only--we ignored that; they've only been a through trips on the dishwasher top rack, but they don't seem any worse for wear

* The straw is surgical tubing, not rigid plastic

* The flip-top seems solidly built, but the plastic is prone to getting tooth marks if you have a kid who likes to gnaw

* The stainless seems pretty impact-resistant; all of the kids have dropped their bottles, but we haven't had any dent or scratch...yet

* The graphics are great--my 8yo picked the white owl graphic, the 4yo got the rocket ship, and the 18-month-old got the frogs--they all seem pleased, and it's easy to identify which bottle belongs to which kid at a glance

* The straw and inside walls get pretty slippery and gross feeling after a day or two; be prepared to wash these at least a few times a week

All told, this is a pretty good bottle: it's sturdy, well made, and the kids love the graphics. I'm knocking a star off because of the profuse sweating. That's really a function of it being single-walled rather than a defect in the product, but it is a minor annoyance. If I were going to buy them again, I would probably spend a few extra bucks and upgrade to the insulated version.

Hi Kris - Thanks for the review! We're glad to hear that your kids love the bottles - and that you do as well. As noted, we do offer insulated bottles for kids in two styles. We recommend the "Frost" - with all the same functionality you mentioned you were happy with, with the added benefit of insulation. It's also available on Backcountry.com.
