Be ready to deal with rear hub issues

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I quickly had trouble with my Easton Haven's rear hub. After talking with some friends who had them I realized I wasn't the only one. The bearing pre-load comes loose frequently and eventually degraded to the point where I couldn't keep it tight anymore and the bearings also became rough. I never tightened the preload anymore than necessary to get the play out of the rear hub. Do a quick google search for a review on these and you'll see that a number of people have the same problem. I'm warrantying these now and will put up more info once I see how Easton Responds.

Like Rolling on a Cloud

Like Tim said above: light and strong.

I have a 10x135 QR rear for my Santa Cruz Heckler and I've put plenty of miles on this wheel from Porcupine Rim in Moab to Bobsled here in SLC. Plenty of agressive riding, but nothing death-metal aggro.

Freewheel is quieter than I expected, which isn't a bad thing. UST compatibility has worked without issue thus far, particularly well with Stan's.

Not really a gram-counter, but there is an appreciable difference between this wheel and the price-point Mavic I had previously. Less mass to rotate is always nice.

Only grip is similar to Sirloin's: they don't ship with a removable-core valve stem. Given that these are UST out of the box, that particular detail would have been useful.

Still a huge fan of this wheel.

Light, strong, killer hubs - what else to say. Great wheelset.

Do it all wheel magic..

I bought these wheels almost 9 months ago and they can truly take anything I can throw at them. I was slightly worried about if they would have to be re-trued or spokes would come un-tensioned since I'm a big aggressive rider. I weigh 220+ with all my gear and I take the fastest most brutal lines that most rims will not like, especially rims that only weigh as little as these do. I have put almost 1000 miles on them and they are still true and have been the best wheels I could hope for. My only gripe is that the stems that come with the wheels don't come with a removable valve stem. You can find them online for 10 bucks but it would have been nice for them to be included. It just makes it easier to fill the tire with sealant when the rim has been seated. You will not be sorry about dropping this kind of money because they look and perform amazing.

1yr Update:
After 1 yr and many miles of abuse, the wheels are still sound with a bit of replacement parts. First thing needing replacement was a broken spoke from some unseen reason, only problem is they need to be bought directly from Easton. Which unfortunately means they only come in a custom bundle of 5 for 25 bucks, and 2 weeks of waiting.
Second thing was the rear free-hub that started grinding and crying out to be replaced. Once that was replaced the front wheel bearings started doing the same thing. They could have spared some of the bling on the hubs and put better bearings, but this is a common complaint on the 2009 wheels. I have read they use better bearings on the newer Havens fortunately.
There were things I didn't expect on rims at this price point and I hope are the last issues that come up.
