When the BMC professional cycling team reaches for its all-purpose road racing wheelset, they will almost certainly go for the Easton EC90 Aero Carbon Tubular Wheelset. The specs read like a grocery list of go-fast -- 56mm rim depth, bladed spokes, internal alloy nipples, and ceramic bearings. Light enough to climb mountains, stiff enough for field sprints, aero enough for breaking away on the flats, and strong enough for the pavé of northern Europe, they're everything a pro rider needs.
The internal nipples are something we noticed (or more appropriately, didn't see) right away. The alloy spoke nipples are hidden inside the rim, making the wheel more aero and thus faster. Yes, they're a pain to true, but if the wheel is built properly, and it doesn't leave the Easton factory unless it is, the wheel won't come out of true. Ever. So you'll never need a spoke wrench and you'll never need to rip a tire off the rim to get to the internal nipples.
If you've followed the progress of Easton wheels since Easton purchased Velomax, you know that they've preserved the aesthetics while improving upon every other part of the wheels. The EC90 Aero is the evolutionary product of the popular Tempest 1 and II wheels. We were glad when they left the threaded hubs behind, and even more so for the several upgrades found here -- better hubs still, and a lighter and much stronger rim. The impact strength is unbelievable. Easton carbon rims for cyclocross? You bet.
The 56mm shape is also a bit different. Easton has taken these wheels to the wind tunnel and has found this shape to be faster than their older rims.
The rear hub is Easton's R4 SL design. Along with the super aero front hub, they're 36 grams lighter per set than the older R4 hubs, plus they include ceramic bearings (grade three hybrid ceramic), a pared down rear axle, and the lightened R4 SL freehub body. The 7050 aluminum alloy axles have tool-free bearing preload adjustment on both wheels, and the pawl carrier has been redesigned to be wider and have a larger diameter to improve its resistance to flex under high-torque loads.
The Easton EC90 Aero Tubular Wheelset has handbuilt carbon rims. Easton is so sure of them, that they do not have rider weight limits. The 21mm wide rims are laced to Sapim bladed stainless steel spokes. The front wheel has 18 radially laced spokes while the rear has 20, radial on the non-drive and cross-two on the drive side. The freehub body is available in both Campagnolo and Shimano/SRAM. A full set of brake pads is included along with a set of quick releases.
