Shave those grams

True, the DT Swiss RWS Ti Road Skewer looks like a standard quick release skewer, but it offers a bit more. Their system takes the quick release in a whole new direction. Laufradbefestigungssystem, or in English, a Ratcheting Wheelmounting System (RWS). It has the springs, adjustable nut, and skewer rod of a quick release, but in place of a lever attached to a cam, there's an alloy lever attached to a bolt head.

The surprise is inside. The fixed end of the rod has teeth that mesh into corresponding teeth inside the lever head. Turn the lever clockwise to tighten. When there is sufficient resistance (15Nm), stop turning. Press the red button to release the ratchet and position the lever in a place where it won't get knocked around. You're done, and the benefits are pretty obvious. It provides up to 50% greater clamping force than with a conventional quick release. The shafts are high-strength 6/4 Grade 5 titanium, and the lever arms are skeletonized aluminum for light weight and durability. Want it off? Simply start turning the lever counter-clockwise.

The DT Swiss RWS Ti Road Skewer is available for the front or rear hub. Each is sold separately. Please Note: These are designed for road use. In particular, the rear RWS skewer is designed for a 130mm rear hub width.

What stops you from over tightening these...

What stops you from over tightening these skewers? Oh wait im Robocop and I have a torque meter in my hand. No seriously how do I know when its at 15Nm

Responded on

With the small lever on the DT Swiss RWS, most people would not be strong enough to tighten the lever beyond 15Nm. The same limiting factor exists on standard quick releases.

Responded on

With respect to Mike, I have to agree it's a legitimate concern. 15nm IS probably tighter than the average person would hand-tighten the thing but, QR skewers CAN absolutely fail from over-tightening. It makes a loud bang...
