RR 440 Rim

System wheels are all the rage as of late, but there's something special about a hand-built wheelset. We're not sure if it's the ability to choose each component, or the idea of a skilled craftsman lacing up something special just for you, but if you want a custom wheelset, the DT Swiss RR 440 Rim is an excellent starting point. Yes, they're light, yes they have brass eyelets for durability, and yes, the sidewalls are machined for consistent braking. But it's the wide, 21mm rim width that brings these rims into the 21st century.

You might be thinking that it's all been done when it comes to single wall aluminum rims, and you wouldn't necessarily be wrong. However, the RR 440 proves that DT Swiss continues to improve upon the time-tested design. Most noticeably, the width has been bumped up as compared to DT's previous offerings. They're 21mm wide at the outside, and the internal width is 16mm. Accordingly, DT rates these rims for use with tires up to 35mm. But the wide rim trend has caught on for a reason, namely that if you're running tires of a more traditional size, the increased width puts more rubber on the road and creates a tire profile that's more compliant to tarmac irregularities. So, this means that the RR 440 profile allows your tires to grip better and roll faster.

The RR 440 features single brass eyelets, which increase durability. The rim joint is reinforced, then welded prior to the entire sidewall being machined. This improves the strength of the rim, while simultaneously improving braking. And despite its impressive strength, the RR 440 comes in at a modest 450 grams. So, you're looking at a rim that's light enough for long climbs, while being strong enough for seasons' worth of training rides.
