Evolution is a funny thing. It stops when there isn't a need for improvement. Like the safety frame and pneumatic tires of 1890, they're pretty much what we're riding today. So it is with the three Velcro strap shoe closure system of today. There are many reasons to like this simple system. It's light, infinitely adjustable, durable, nearly impossible to break, and never experiences catastrophic failure. Yes, there are dials. Yes, there are ratcheting buckles. While the others may come and go, the three Velcro straps will remain as they have for more than 20 years. So it is no surprise that DMT continues to offer a Velcro strapped shoe at the Pro level -- the Radial 2. This version is made with three holes in the standard Look-style mounting pattern.

DMT believes in wrapping your feet. The upper is built on a 'slip last' meaning that it's constructed from one piece of nylon mesh reinforced with microfiber and wrapped around the last before being secured below the board. The upper, thanks to the mesh and microfiber combination, doesn't stretch, which helps keep your foot in place. There are no seams to rub against your foot, and slip-lasting allows the upper to conform to your foot easily. The end result is much greater comfort. At the back of the shoe, the external heel cup is deep and soft and holds your heel securely.

They have also upgraded the insole this year to their heat-moldable ASL model. It looks like the standard foam insole on top, but when you take it out of the shoe and flip it over, you can see that there is rigid EVA foam in the plantar and heel areas of the foot. It's designed so that when you heat the insole up in the oven, place it in your shoe, stand in the shoe and tighten the upper, the insole will mold around your foot. This increases the contact between your foot and the shoe and reducing pressure on any single spot on the foot. You'll get better stability and a reduced likelihood of hot spots. All add up to greater comfort when riding.

The Radial's CX carbon sole is made from Toray MR60, which is a 40 ton high modulus carbon fiber. That means it has a tensile strength of 40 tons per square cm. In other words, it's got stiffness in spades. Toray is one of the top manufacturers of carbon fiber worldwide; it's the same stuff used by Pinarello in their frames. The lay-up of the carbon and the shape of the sole are exclusive to DMT. The soles are made from nine layers of carbon fiber woven at 0 deg, 45 deg and 90 deg angles. Of course the sole must be looked at as a whole, but each angle in the carbon lay-up will offer strength in different ways. The woven exterior is for great looks and adds durability for cruising across the parking lot from your car to the start line.

The CX sole has been upgraded with a replaceable heel pad. It's bigger than the older pad as well, making it easier to walk on and longer-lasting. No cyclist likes to admit they walk in their cycling shoes, but we all do; this new pad makes it easier.

The DMT Radial 2 Shoe with Look Sole is available in White/Black. It comes in most full and half sizes from 38 to 50 European. The Velcro straps are pulled against stainless steel D-rings.

Great Shoe for the money!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I found that I wear the same size DMT shoe (49) as I wear in Sidi shoes (49). I tried the Prisma model first and found the upper to be very uncomfortable near the tongue. The Radial fits my foot better (long, low volume, bony) and they seem to be a bit more adjustable with the three velcro straps. Sole is stiff for good power transfer and is comfortable on long rides. If your shoe size is larger than 48, you know how hard it is to find a carbon soled shoe. Get these while they last!

Sizing

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Great shoes. My biggest question before purchasing (from Chainlove) was around the sizing, so I'll add my opinion in case others out there are wondering the same. My other couple pairs of cycling shoes are Specialized. Wear a 46 in both and have enough room in both for two pairs of socks or a thicker winter sock, if needed, and still feel comfortable. Bought these DMTs in a 46, and they're definitely tighter. In my estimation, probably about a half size from Specialized. My problem with the DMTs is that the don't have a 46.5 (only a 46 or 47). I could have sent them back and tried a 47, but I chose to keep them for thin sock days and when I'm really looking to go snug.

In terms of the shoes themselves, very light, stiff, and great quality. If I can get the right fit, DMT could be my brand for many years to come.

The Perfect choice

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My second pair of DMT's and my next pair of shoes will be DMT's as well. Sidi's are great as well, but at twice the price. Since I prefer velco straps I get a pro model shoe for about half of what pro model shoes are going for. Couldn't be happier.
