Description

For many, precision is the name of the game when it comes to adjusting uppers. These people want to be able to reduce slack around their feet a few mm at a time until the shoe is tight without cutting off circulation, like a vegan anaconda. One click can micro-tighten the entire upper evenly and smoothly. It is for this reason that DMT developed the Prisma 2 Shoe. To make it even easier to adjust, they upgraded the fixing method to the ATOP closure system and have updated the upper. We have it here with a Speedplay specific carbon sole.

The ratcheting buckle and cable system of the earlier Prisma had its fans. However, the adjustment wasn't as smooth as it could be, and opening it up was less than perfect. So DMT replaced it with a dial. Turn the rotor clockwise, it tightens. Turn it counter-clockwise by 45-degrees, and the cable releases. There are three sectors that the cable wraps around: the upper, middle, and lower foot.

DMT wraps your feet in other ways as well. The upper is built on a 'slip last' meaning that it's constructed from one piece of mesh and wrapped around the last before being secured below the board. There are no seams to rub against your foot, and it allows the upper to conform to your foot's shape very easily; both mean greater comfort. There's microfiber on top of the mesh to reduce stretch to zero, but even with the microfiber on top of the mesh, the shoe breathes very well. At the back of the shoe, the external heel cup is deep and soft and holds your heel securely. The tongue is made of microfiber and is padded to better disperse any pressure that might come from the cable lace.

They have also upgraded the insole this year to their heat-moldable ASL model. It looks like the standard foam insole on top, but when you take it out of the shoe and flip it over, you can see that there is rigid EVA foam in the plantar and heel areas of the foot. It's designed so that when you heat the insole up in the oven, place it in your shoe, stand in the shoe and tighten the upper, the insole will mold around your foot. This increases the contact between your foot and the shoe and reducing pressure on any single spot on the foot. You'll get better stability and a reduced likelihood of hot spots. All add up to greater comfort when ridint'

This version of the Prisma's CX carbon sole has a bolt pattern specific to Speedplay cleats. That means no more 3-bolt to 4-bolt adapters and a savings of 24 g per pedal. Without the adapter plate, you're lowering your stack height by 3mm -- giving you better pedaling efficiency and a lower likelihood for hot spots. It's also more aerodynamic. The DMT CX Speedplay carbon sole uses varying thicknesses in different places. But at the critical cleat interface it is a wispy-thin 3.5 mm allowing for an optimum foot to pedal distance.

Like the Look version of the sole, it's made from Toray MR60, which is a 40 ton high modulus carbon fiber. That means it has a tensile strength of 40 tons per square cm. In other words, it's got stiffness in spades. Toray is one of the top manufacturers of carbon fiber worldwide; the carbon-fiber cloth and resin is the same stuff used by Pinarello in some of their frames. The lay-up of the carbon and the shape of the sole are exclusive to DMT. The soles are made from nine layers of carbon fiber molded at 0, 45, and 90-degree angles. By working the plies in different directions, they're able to maximize stiffness both laterally and longitudinally; this means that no energy will be lost when pushing down on the pedals.

Please Note: When mounting Speedplay cleats directly on these shoes it is imperative to use Speedplay's Carbon Sole Wear Protector Shim. Failure to do so may damage the sole and will void the warranty. We also recommend using Speedplay's Long Cleat Screw Kit to ensure that your thread interface is sufficient to keep the cleats attached to the shoes during hard efforts.

The DMT Prisma 2 Shoe with Speedplay Sole is available in a Black/fluorescent yellow or Silver/white. It comes in most full and half sizes from 39 to 48 European. It has a claimed weight of 250g per shoe in size 41.

Here's what others have to say...

I have a wide forefoot, are the shoes...

I have a wide forefoot, are the shoes generally tight fitting or wider in the toe box, like the Lake CX's?

Best Answer Responded on

These shoes generally do not fit tight in the toe box. If you have a wider forefoot but normal heel width, these will fit you just fine. The boa system also helps dial in the right fit so you won't need to worry about fussing with straps.

Great fit / first impression

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I really like the way these shoes feel. I purchased a pair of DMT Radial 2 (velcro), size 43 and never quite felt comfortable in them. After shifting the cleats I decided to try 43.5 and bought the Prisma 2s. I was worried about the seemingly narrow gap in the closure, but they wrap around my foot like a glove.

I've tried many shoes, even the top of the line Specialized, but couldn't find a good fit. Most shoes now seem to use a really wide toe box that doesn't work for my narrow foot. These fit great. 43.5 in DMT matches 43.5 in Specialized...

the price change?

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

the price was 210USD when i order it some hours ago. and now change to 175usd....why???

Responded on

from what i've noticed, the less inventory available, the lower the price. Hence, the reason for the price drop, i'm sure. Call CC for a price drop refund. If they have your same style and size available, they will refund you the difference.

Awesome shoes

I was looking for native 4 hole speedplay compatible shoes. i tried Sidi, and northwave and finally settled on these. The fit is great and feel so light. The carbon sole is fantastic i feel like i get some extra power on the climbs. I like these so much I bought two pairs. And let me not forget too mention the great service from backcountry.

How is the sizing compared to the Sidis?

Responded on

Definately wider. I find these at least as wide as the Shimano Wide Fit. 45.5 in these v 47 in Sidis.
