Although Belgium is usually the first place that you think of when someone mentions cyclocross, the Pacific Northwest, home of Diamondback Bikes, is known for equally demanding courses and impressively hardcore riders. Mud, rain, rutted roots, and slippery rocks all contribute to some of the hardest to ride terrain anywhere — and that's without the man made barriers. The Diamondback Steilacoom RCX Pro Disc Complete Bike, christened after the Puget Sound town of the same name, is the embodiment of everything Northwest and everything cyclocross.
Its frame was built with fully-butted 6061-T6 Alloy. What's a fully-butted frame? Well, when tubes are joined in this manner, rather than featuring a continuous wall thickness, the ends of the tubes are given varying widths, which in turn, creates a stronger frame. And although it sounds counterintuitive to remove metal to increase strength, frames usually fail at the joints, and butted construction decreases the stress concentration factor in the joints. Less material equals less stress, which equates to more strength. The Steilacoom frame includes a formed top tube with a flat bottom that's designed for comfortable carries. Cables are routed on top in order to prevent them from digging into your shoulder. Meanwhile, the BB386 bottom bracket creates a light, yet stiff platform for acceleration.
Diamondback looked to Easton for its fork on the Steilacoom RCX Pro. The Easton EC90-XD answers the call for responsive braking in the corners. It's a full-carbon fiber fork featuring a massive crown, over-sized legs, a tapered steerer tube, and disc brake mounts. This fork's 460 gram weight makes it one of the lightest options on the market. And like the other forks in Easton's top-tier EC90 line, the XD features full carbon construction, Internal Thread Technology, a R.A.D. Steerer, and Taperwall technologies. This fork also features integrated cable routing to keep your cables free from mud and grime.
The Steilacoom RCX Pro is no slacker in the component department either. SRAM Force 10-speed is used for the derailleurs and the double-tap shifters. Drivetrain duties are driven by a SRAM 46/36t S950 carbon monocoque crankset with a BB386 for an exceptionally stiff pedaling platform. Rounding out the back is a 12-26t SRAM PG-1070 cassette and a SRAM PC-1071 chain. Avid BB-7 mechanical disc brakes ensure that you'll stop no matter what the conditions. Meanwhile, the cockpit is comprised of FSA carbon fiber SL-K handlebars, stem, and seatpost, and a WTB Silverado saddle. And lastly, the wheelset is also sourced from the venerable Easton with EA90-XD wheels and hubs that are wrapped in Michelin Cyclocross Mud 2 700c x 30mm tires.
The Diamondback Steilacoom RCX Pro Complete bike is available in the color Silver and the sizes 50, 53, 56, and 59cm.
