Yes, technically, that department store kids' bike is a bike. It might, technically, roll. But the difference between it and a real kids' mountain bike like the Diamondback Octane 20 Kids' Bike is the difference between them wanting to get out and ride, and them forgetting about it because the bike is heavy and breaks constantly. Get them rolling the right way with a bike designed by a company that wants them to fall in love with the sport.
What distinguishes the Octane series from the Cobra series is frame
material. The Octane 20 is more expensive because it's built upon an
aluminum frame, as opposed to the Cobra's steel bones, making the Octane
lighter, thus easier to pedal up hills, and generally more fun to ride
around all day — and, of course, easier for Mom and Dad to hang up in
the garage. Otherwise, parts are all very similar. The suspension fork
up front is there to help take the shock out of impacts, helping them
maintain control when dropping over curbs or landing off of the
inevitable plywood jumps. And, because Diamondback hates the idea of the
bike spending more time at the shop than out in the sun, it specs the
Octane with a fantastic blend of Shimano drivetrain parts to ensure
reliability, without constant maintenance. A full 21-speed grip-shift
system keeps them moving, and the stout 36-spoke-hole wheelset wrapped
in all-terrain tires will last through all the abuse they can muster.
Lastly, the linear-pull alloy brakes with reach-adjust levers means
precise and confidence-building braking control.
The Diamondback Octane 20 Kids Bike comes only in the color Red and in one size. The bike is sized for kids between the approximate heights of 4'0" (122cm) and 4'7" (140cm). Please note that the bike comes almost fully built but needs some minor assembly and tuning out of the box, so we strongly recommend visiting a trusted local bike shop to give it a once-over before riding.
