Mason Comp GX Complete Mountain Bike - 2016

The 2016 Diamondback Mason Comp GX Complete Mountain Bike isn't your typical short-and-steep hardtail. With its moderate geometry and big, capable wheels, the Mason inspires much more confidence over all-mountain terrain than its suspension would initially suggest. This year, Diamondback adapts the Mason to 27.5+ wheels, adding front and rear Boost spacing to give it better traction through challenging trail conditions and a stiffer, burlier ride. This build kits out with a mix of SRAM GX and X5 componentry, Avid hydraulic disc brakes, and DB wheels wrapped in burly Schwalbe Nobby Nic tires to grip and rip over a wide range of terrain.

Diamondback keeps the Mason at a decidedly palatable price point by shaping its frame out of treated 6061-T6 aluminum, the lightweight, durable standard for high-end alloy frames. The geometry features a 68-degree head tube angle and 17in chainstays for all-mountain stability on descents, with 130mm of plush travel up front for the many days you'll be tempted to venture away from smooth XC singletrack.

Front and rear Boost spacing stiffens the entire frame, as the wider hubs necessitate a more acute, and consequently stronger, spoke bracing angle than traditional spacing, especially when paired with much beefier Boost hubs. While you're enjoying the benefits of a more responsive rear triangle and front end, the 27.5+ wheels help the frame barrel over the same terrain your 29er could, showing off the confidence-inspiring grip they're earning a reputation for on loose, inconsistent stretches of trail. In addition to boosting grip, the 2.8in tires also create a plusher overall ride, and in the world of hardtails, a little extra cushiness can go a long way.
