Your friends have been telling you for a while now that you should get a bike and join them for trail rides on the weekends, and after a recent ski day left your legs burning and your friends waiting up for you at the lift line, you've finally decided they're right. If you're unsure about shelling out the cost of a used car to get yourself out on singletrack, we'd consider the Diamondback Atroz Comp Complete Mountain Bike. Made for aggressive trail riding, the Atroz features 120mm of travel, nimble 27.5 wheels, and dependable hydraulic disc brakes, all backed by a SRAM 10-speed drivetrain to introduce you to everything you've been missing on the trails.
Diamondback constructs the Atroz using 6061-T6 aluminum, a treated version of the metal with an ideal blend of high strength and low weight. The frame's geometry caters to all-mountain pursuits, with a slack, 66.5-degree head tube angle complemented by a longer wheelbase and chainstays to stabilize the frame and improve tracking during high-speed, technical descents. The 27.5in wheels balance this low-slung geometry well by ensuring the Atroz remains responsive when you encounter a series of switchbacks in the middle of a long, slow climb or find yourself needing to dice through some root lattices.
Diamondback trusts RockShox for the Atroz's suspension. The 120mm RockShox Monarch R rear shock runs smoothly and consistently through the pedal stroke on a single-pivot design, while up front, the 120mm RockShox Recon Silver fork provides bump-swallowing plushness on big descents. On rough sections of trail, you'll appreciate the chain guide holding everything in place, while SRAM's one-by, 10-speed X-7 rear derailleur gives you room to test your legs with a variety of gears on new, challenging terrain. When you do want to slow down, the Tektro hydraulic disc brakes keep panic at bay, dependably stopping you regardless of weather and rough trail conditions.
