Description

Pay homage the DeFeet way.

DeFeet's Slipstream 4-inch Shoe Covers are the result of careful observation of professional cyclists' footwear behavior over the years. What we mean is that up until the late '80s, cyclists would wear a pair of socks over their shoes while racing and training. According to DeFeet, the riders' reasoning for this was that it was more aerodynamic, kept the shoes cleaner, looked better, and made them faster than naked shoes alone.

So, to pay homage to the classic era of cycling, and to block the icy winds, DeFeet came up with the Slipstream. Like a sock, only better. Like a bootie, only thinner. The material is 60% cordura, 30% nylon, 10% Lycra. So it's durable, provides some protection from the wind, and has generous stretch. There's a line stitched in the bottom showing where you should cut the threads with a pair of scissors in order to allow your cleats to poke through. Additionally, like a sock, there's a top cuff. In this case, it's a traditional DeFeet cuff that's four-inches tall.

The Slipstreams are perfect for the days when it's too cold to have a naked shoe, but it's too warm to have a completely windproof shoe cover. Admittedly, though, this temperature line completely depends on the person and the activity.

The DeFeet Slipstream 4-inch Shoe Covers are available in the sizes Small/Medium and Large/X-Large. They come in the colors D-Logo Hi-Vis Yellow/reflective, D-Logo Black, D-Logo Blue, D-Logo Hi-Vis Pink, D-Logo Red, and D-Logo White.

Great function at a great price

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have had a pair of these for 10 years and they're still going strong. The heel has a hole in it now from 10 years of use - but so do expensive booties, although you pay more for that feature on some models. They keep my feet and toes warm down to 45 - 50 degrees (as long as you don't use a thin summer sock) but don't have the bulky feel of booties. Better for dry days than rainy ones but especially good for days when the roads are wet but the skies are dry - protects your shoes and keeps the moisture off. The cuff also keeps your ankle covered which provides extra warmth. Can't imagine not having a pair of these. I've worn them on road and mtb rides. They wash up well, even in the white color. Follow the direction on cutting for the cleat - don't cut too much or cut a hole - just cut a line in the sock.

I assume these make me look cool?

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Living in a place where many pro cyclists also live and ride, I often see the pros riding around in the spring and fall with cool looking "overstocks." I finally gave in and decided I needed to look cool on the bike also. I ended up getting the high vis yellow shoe covers and was impressed by how thick and durable they are. Obviously, they are intended to serve a purpose other than making you look cool - they provide warmth and with the high vis yellow allow you to stand out on the road. They are easy to take on and off - I'm a shoe size 12/46.5 and went with the L/XL. Easy to cut out a whole for your cleats and heel pad.

Perfect for spring or mild winters

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My winter consists of five months of wet, freezing temperatures. Accordingly, my preference for covers is that they're waterproof, windproof, and slightly insulated. However, when the temperature gets between about 45 and 60, the DeFeet Slipstreams are awesome. The cut-your-own cleat opening makes them compatible with nearly every cleat configuration, and the fluoro colorways are bold to say the least. If I lived in a more temperate area, these would get five stars, but given that I need a little more UMPH, these will get four.

never get cold feet

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

When the temps are in the 40s and 50s I find neoprene too hot. These De Feet shoe covers provide just the right amount of warmth your feet need. The Hi-Vis pink make you noticeable on those dull over cast days.
