Age of idolatry.

The name De Rosa conjures a certain sense of romance that extends beyond the cardioid imagery of the logo, encompassing both the golden history of cycling and, with the latest model of the recently revived Idol Road Frameset, the design innovations that will define the sport's future. It's rare that a frame can embody both the era of the Cannibal — where cycling's memory enshrines lugged steel and down tube shifters in the sepia tones of a golden age — with today's peloton of carbon fiber and electronic shifting, but attaching the classic De Rosa name to the decidedly contemporary Idol brings the historic and the modern together in an undeniably attractive package.

De Rosa's carbon layup maps T1000 and T800 modulus carbon fibers across the Idol's geometry in a 7:3 ratio, respectively. These materials collectively define the top-end of carbon fibers, with T1000 setting the standard for tensile strength and T800 posting a corresponding mark for compressive strength that earned it a starring role in jumbo passenger jets around the world. The result is a frame that takes full advantage of T1000's stiffness at critical power transfer junctures but mitigates what would otherwise be a punishing ride with selective application of T800 to absorb road noise and provide a touch of vertical compliance leading up to the seatpost.

Despite the concession to compliance and the frame's curvy lines, the Idol's geometry has a sharp focus on speed. The front end features a tapered head tube that leads into a squared-edged down tube, bottom bracket, and chainstays for power transfer that doesn't diffuse into torsional flex. This drivetrain spine is built-up without lapsing into the comical obesity common in the industry, and the overall stiffness is further complemented with a BB386 bottom bracket. BB386's wide girth and 30mm spindle ensures that there is no weak link between your body and the wheels.

While the T1000 carbon largely defines the Idol, it's also easy to spot the areas that dip into the T800 honey pot. The slightly bowed top tube and conventionally round seat tube take advantage of both material and mechanical damping in order to smooth the road ahead. The bowed, thinned, and slightly flattened seatstays operate on the same principles for vertical compliance that keeps fatiguing road noise out of your seatpost.

The frame's steep head angle and relatively long top tube make for a racing geometry that belies the endurance-look of the curved top tube. Instead, it responds quickly to input under acceleration, carves through turns like it's on rails, and descends with a well-mannered, wobble-free confidence that empowers a racer's aggressive tendencies for speed. As you'd expect, the race-ready Idol is also ready to accommodate either mechanical or electronic groupsets.
