Italian precision.

All of De Marchi's kits are designed with a near-obsessive focus on clean lines and fit details, so the Leggera's sleek, elegant styling comes as no surprise. Modeled after De Marchi's warm-weather Pro Jersey, the Leggera uses 100% Italian materials, along with a fit and graphic treatment inspired by professional team kits, to create one of the best looking and most comfortable jerseys on the road.

A jersey starts with two things: fit and fabric. De Marchi wove the Leggera from stretchy, soft, and highly breathable microfiber, and patterned it using its Contour fit concept for a comfortable, body-hugging shape that won't inhibit movement or hinder performance. Raglan seams wrap around the front of the shoulders to eliminate rubbing and restriction in an aggressive riding position, and a highly structured mesh back panel increases breathability and provides support for the three elastic rear pockets.

Of course, De Marchi made its name by paying attention to the details, so it's no surprise that the locking YKK front zipper has an internal chin flap to prevent discomfort, or that the dropped rear hem has a gel strip to keep it from riding up. The fabric also features SPF 50+ sun protection to save your skin on sunny days, along with reflective details and logos that take some of the worry out of dawn and dusk rides.

De Marchi Jersey

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large

I find the jersey runs long and is loose fitting in some areas. In addition it is too warm for mid summer riding.

Your laundry funds will suffer.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: Large

I no longer look like I did in my 20s. Instead of a sleek, racer's torso, I've definitely graduated to dad bod land. The Leggera fits me better than my old race kit, but it doesn't lapse into the shapelessness of club fit jerseys. If you're not looking like Contador these days, but you still value well-made, well-fitting kit, then the slightly longer, slightly more generous body of De Marchi stuff will suit you perfectly. Plus, you can't beat those classic aesthetics. I haven't worn another jersey since I got this one about four weeks ago, and I've done an average of four rides a week. While the jersey is a joy on the bike, keeping it clean all the time is having a negative impact on my laundry fund.

The Leggera is a little bit heavy for use in 90+ degrees, but I find it's ideal for early summer rides where the temperatures range from 65 F at sunrise to the high-80s around noon.

Finally, in addition to the clean, classic looks, De Marchi prides itself on the fine details of craftsmanship. Certain brands (Assos, Rapha, etc.) loudly tout themselves as the kings of craft, but De Marchi is very quietly producing kit that often surpasses the often over-hyped brands. These details include the zipper garage, the subtle branding details (the patch between the shoulder blades is an outstanding touch), and the full-length, under-zipper flap. That flap deserves special attention here because it never needs special attention while I'm zipping it up: unlike every other jersey I've used with a similar feature, De Marchi's under-flap manages to miraculously avoid snagging in the zipper.

A Nice Jersey

  • Fit: Runs large

This is a nice jersey. It is made of comfortable fabric that breaths well. The product description ways it is modeled after a warm weather jersey. I don't know if I would go as far to say this is a warm weather jersey, but it does have thicker construction than other jersey's I own.

For me, the jersey sizing seemed a little big. I usually try to grab a large for most European brands, but I got a medium in this jersey knowing De Marchi fits closer to what I'm used to here in the US. I'd still say that the medium is a little big in the mid section for me. I should caveat that by saying I am a skinny guy, so the sizing might be a little more accurate for others. Next time I try one of their jerseys I'll probably give the small a try.

As mentioned in the other review. De Marchi's attention to detail is incredible. Simple things like embroidering their logo instead of using a cheap sticker and adding a little piece of fabric at the end of the zipper to keep it from rubbing your neck are just the kinds of details you know come from expert craftsman.

Best kept secret

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

[I actually bought this jersey through Amazon through Backcountry, an affiliate of Competitive Cyclist. I love this jersey so much I had to cut and paste my Amazon review here.]

I'm perplexed why this brand isn't popular in the US. I never heard of it and never see other cyclists wearing this brand.

Seeing this jersey on sale convinced me to give it a try. And I am not disappointed.

The look and feel and quality of this jersey is exceptional. The color is deep and vibrant, design simple yet stylish. The deeper back pockets are more useful than other jersey's. The racing cut is flattering.

The craftsmanship rivals other Italian cycling brands. According to De Machi's website, they've been around since the '40s and I don't understand why its not more popular with discerning cyclists. I will definitely buy this brand again.
