Keeps the boys happy.

As tough as summer riding can be for those who live in hot climes, dressing is easy. Simply wear as little as possible -- a jersey and shorts. Winter riding is far more difficult in terms of preparing for the day. We've found the key to comfortable off-season cycling to be reliable, temperature appropriate clothing. The De Marchi Contour Plus Ultra Bib Tights are recommended for temperatures that range from 23 to 41 degrees. This is the range where we're often tempted to stay inside, yet we know that a comfortable ride is more than possible -- it's just outside the front door. The secret to enjoying yourself is windproof coverage.

De Marchi arms the Contour Plus Ultra Tights with their three layer Thermashield fabric. It's a laminated combination of a stretchy outer mesh, a water-resistant, windproof, breathable membrane in the middle, and a waffled hydrophobic microfiber lining. The result is luxurious warmth even in biting winter weather. The windproof front is complemented by ThermoRoubaix HT panels in the back. The brushed finish is soft against bare skin, and its permeable nature lets out excess body heat as you ride. On the top, wide lycra straps offer the right kind of support without adding bulk.

The Contour Plus Ultra Bib Tights are built for serious winter miles. As such they boast the enhanced C11 Elastic Interface Technology (EIT) pad. This chamois consists of two half-moon sections sonically welded together for a flat, almost undetectable seam. The multi-density foam pad is perforated for optimum ventilation and is topped by a wicking, bacteriostatic waffled micro fiber fabric. Just like a good base layer, the chamois wicks moisture away from your skin and transfers it towards the shorts' exterior where it can evaporate so you won't be soaked in sweat down there for hours.

De Marchi cuts the panels for a contoured fit that allows you to move effortlessly. This is a big deal for days that require a big effort just to get started. You'll benefit from less effort in another small, but important way. They've included a short zipper in the front of the bib uppers to facilitate getting them on and off and for the all-important nature break at the roadside. The De Marchi Contour Plus Ultra Bib Tights are Black and are available in five sizes from Small to XX-Large.

  • ThermaShield TiX fabric provides full frontal protection against the wind and cold
  • A compressive fit eliminates uncomfortable chafing issues
  • A C11 chamois provides comfort and keeps you riding longer

Amazingly warm and windblocking

I can't believe how well these tights cut through a headwind or frigid downhill. The windblocking/insulating ThermaShield extends up the front of the legs, across the crotch, and up the front of the bibs to provide more protection than most competitors. In fact, the bib front (which extends up to my solar plexus) includes a zipper for easier entry/exit, and I've found myself zipping it down during hard rides near freezing to keep from overheating my core. The legs breathe well, but I wouldn't wear these if I expected the temperature to rise above 45 degrees.

The fit is pretty tight. I'm 5'9", 150 lbs, 31" waist and the medium is a tight fit. I like them snug, but they require a some tugging to get on and I wouldn't want them any millimeter tighter.
