Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.

Sharp looking stylish shorts to match your sharp & stylish riding
I love the fit and style of these shorts! I got them in black and they have a little blue theme to them to give them great style. I personally like the blue mesh (open the vent zips and it gives the front some style), which makes my other shorts' white mesh look "tighty whitey" colored. It has a dual snap waist band (doesn't come undone when I crouch/tuck like others) with a velcro/strap to tighten the elastic around the side of the waist. There's plenty of pockets, 2 back, 2 front slash, 1 thigh, and they work well. The rear pockets are super secure, with weather flaps and zips and the slash pockets are secure enough for keys, electronics, and tools. The cut is great--it's sufficiently roomy and the legs just touches the top of my knee, which is the length I love. Material is a bit stiff, but it holds up to wear and washing really well. It's double stitched with really thin blue thread which is almost stealth, which is a nice quality touch. The fit is great, but the waist is a bit loose for me, with the Sm and a 27" waist, but the elastic/velcro tabs on the side fixes that. The big belt loops are the perfect size for my Sansa Clip+ to clip onto... I sometimes hit the buttons when crouching, but at least it doesn't get steamed in my pocket.
These quickly becoming my go to shorts when I want to look good, but Jett and Royal shorts still win in terms of technical performance and overall build quality. Royal could learn a thing or two about inseam length and styling from Dakine. Jett seems to have learned a lot, but could try and get their new stuff to be as cheap (Jett comes with removable padded liners, while these don't).
For you guys in cooler locales, these are close to perfect for a trail/freeride short. The quality is superior to any Fox shorts I've tried; the construction and detailing are top notch. Beefy nylon outers w/ mesh lining (no chamois though - you can throw a padded liner underneath em for longer cross country rides). For hotter areas, these are just too thick & beefy, even with the thigh vents. Extremely comfortable shorts - I use 'em for casual wear the majority of the time. I really like the pockets - both are nice & deep, & the rear pockets have zippers so you won't ever lose your wallet if you rag-doll off a trail. They've got beefy velcro side waist adjusters and belt loops so you can cinch 'em down. I wear a 36-inch waist in pants and shorts - the XL's fit me perfectly. I'm really happy with the length, too - long enough to reach just past my kneecaps (I wear 36 inseam pants). The only issue I have is that the material is so thick at the top edge of the waist that it rubs the sides of my lil love handles a bit. Did I mention how burly the fabric is? It's tough stuff.
Just got these shorts in a size small. I typically wear a 30-32 in pants depending on the brand. Dakine says that the small is to fit 30-32 which should be right in my wheel-house. They are definitely a tad tight in the waist. Good length, falling about 2 inches below my knees (I'm 5'7" 150lbs). Overall a really nice short, I just wish they were a touch looser seeing as they are a "mountain bike" short. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you're near the top of the size spectrum, buy the next size up.
I wear a size 33 in pants and bought the size large, and its truly a size large. Almost a little too big for me but the velcro waist adjustment tabs took care of the loose space. Most of the time I wear a pair of FOX Launch shorts under these, and with that padding the fit is perfect. Cut leaves plenty of room in the crotch and doesn't feel tight when you're pedaling with the seat at full height. Well placed vents that do their job to let some cool air in, and the pockets are deep and mesh lined to help cool things down further.
Build is rugged without being overwhelmingly heavy and hot, these shorts will take a beating.
So comfortable I wear them around the yard when I'm not planning on biking.
I'm digging these shorts. They have simple clean lines and the perfect balance of things you need. The small lower pocket on the right leg is perfect for your phone, the pass pocket is nice if you live in lift country, but minimal if you don't use it. Deep front pockets are sweet and you don't feel like you'll loose stuff when you stack on that step-up.
I picked up a set of XXLs. I'm a big dude and typically wear a 38 or even 40 waist depending on brand. Dakine seems to run a bit small and these work for my big self. Clean fit, not super baggy. Just right. Well done Dakine.
I love these shorts. I wear them all the time. They are great to ride in. And I wear them all the time around town because they are comfy, pockets are solid, and i they dont get dirty (I have the black) which is important to me because i always get grease on my clothes, and other assorted stains....hahaha
Just got these today and they feel awesome. Haven't gotten a chance to ride in them yet, but i am very impressed right out of the gate. I'm a 34" waist so the larges fit great, they have velcro adjustment tabs and belt loops so you'll always be able to tighten them up if need be. the thing that blew me away the most was the feel, they resemble a board short but with bike functionality and durability. they don't come with a chamois, but they are compatible. the inner liner is all mesh which is probably what reminds me of the board shorts. super sick shorts fit is about as far away from spandex as you can get.
Jay, I own these and have a 34 waist. Grab a large. These also have elastic adjustments on the waist if you need to snug them down. I think that you will enjoy these. CAUTION: these don't come with an internal liner. Great for over DH pads though.
