CycleOps The Silencer Direct Drive Mag w/Cassette $0.00
You know all too well that the sounds that emanate from your trainer are loud, to say the least. If you live in an apartment or condo, how many times have you tried to get a late night session in and soft-pedaled most of the time to avoid the wind noise of a fast-spinning resistance unit? Have you been relegated to the patio or garage in the dead of winter? CycleOps has the solution to your cold weather woes -- the Silencer Direct Drive Mag Unit.
To begin with, the Silencer system eliminates the need for a rear wheel by attaching the bike's cassette directly to the large, weighted flywheel, effectively mimicking the inertia of a bicycle in motion and generating progressive resistance. Set up is simple: remove your rear wheel, attach the rear drop outs to the spindle and away you go. This unique system accomplishes two things. First, you'll no longer feel those dead spots all too common when using a trainer tire that is not perfectly round. In fact, you won't need to buy trainer tires at all. Second, you'll find that the ride feels much more like you are on the road rather than on a trainer, and as the height of the cassette matches a 28in or 700c wheel, you won't need a block for the front wheel. If you wish to train on a 26in wheel, however, you'll need a riser block.
The frame of the trainer is constructed with a wide stance and adjustable leveling knobs. To this end, you can stand and sprint without pulling your rear wheel, as is the danger with a traditional trainer. Please note, though, that the trainer is a hefty 39lbs and although it is portable, it is not easy to travel with.
Now you're probably wondering how well the resistance works with the cassette. Well, because you won't have friction from the road, even your 11 won't feel that large on a trainer. For this reason, the Silencer features five magnetic resistance settings. These are adjusted through a handlebar mounted shifter. These 5 positions give you enough resistance for full-on sprints. The direct drive system, as well as the magnetic flywheel, ensure that your indoor training rides will be whisper quiet.
The CycleOps Silencer Direct Drive Mag Unit is available in one size. It will accommodate a 130mm or 135mm rear chainstay width and wheels from 26in to 700c. The cassette is included

Is this Campy compatible?
It is only compatible with Sram and Shimano.
- Familiarity:I've used it several times
Well, I've used it a handful of times. I'm still clinging to the few 40+ days we have left. On that note.... This thing weighs a "ton"! Definitely not something I care for. I have two herniated discs in my back. So it stays put. It is however easy to put your bike on. The resistance is smooth, and I feel like I do get a very good ride on it. 60 minutes on it is time well spent. ( cause that's about as long as I can mentally stand spinning in one place! Lol). I do believe it is worth the money. Probably the best indoor unit I've used.
I purchased the Silencer about a month ago for winter training and I am very happy with it so far. It is much quieter than fluid/mag trainers I have had in the past but it is definitely not "silent". The resistance levels have been sufficient for me but I'm no Greg LeMond. I've read reviews that say you don't need any type of riser or climbing block but there's definitely a downhill feeling without one. The biggest drawback is that it is very heavy. This is not something you want to move in and out of the closet every time you want to use it.
What is the Power Capacity (watts) of this...
What is the Power Capacity (watts) of this unit on full resistance?
I spoke with CycleOps and they do not have specific max wattage on the Silencer, but they estimate that the max range is 1000-1200 watts. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. email@example.com
