Make a data list and check it twice.

Bad news, road cyclists: winter's here. Eventually, most of us decide that the possible gains from staying out on the road in unforgiving winter conditions are outweighed by the discomfort of cycling in said conditions, so we move indoors for the long trainer hibernation. If you're fortunate enough to have a CycleOps Phantom 3 Indoor Cycle in the basement, this doesn't mean sacrificing your rear wheel's skewer by locking your road bike into a stationary trainer, losing use of a PowerTap rear hub by getting on a normal indoor bike, or occasionally throwing yourself into the wall during an inattentive moment on rollers.

If the Phantom 3's heart is the PowerTap rear hub, then its brain is the Joule GPS+ head unit and its, um, liver is the included heart rate monitor. This network of data-handling presents and manages all the workout metrics that you never knew you needed, and the Joule GPS+ and heart rate monitor also take that show on the road. While the Phantom 3 itself is obviously the star here, the impressive GPS+ head unit definitely warrants some additional attention.

Whereas your typical computer will give you speed, average speed, cadence, distance, and even some elevation or topo information, the Joule GPS+ gives you the information you'd normally only have when you're off the bike and in front of your computer. This includes a glut of different power metrics that you can upload to the cloud, transfer to a training app, and parse to identify in-the-saddle weaknesses to later target in training. It's also speaks Bluetooth and ANT+, so you're virtually guaranteed a connection to your preferred smart device.

The range of data collection means that the Joule GPS+/Phantom combo's precise metric gathering (an industry-leading +/- 1.5%—thanks, PowerTap!) makes it an ideal platform for a regimen that lets you manage all of the external variables for training or testing your form, regardless of the conditions outside. The beauty of riding in your living room is there are no wind or road obstacles to skew your times, so if you want precise control over training, you've got it, no matter the season.

But we admit: the thought of riding indoors while staring at the wall isn't terribly appealing. CycleOps agrees, so it's throwing in a free, two-week trial of CycleOps VirtualTraining. With VirtualTraining, you can happily ignore all of the workout information accumulating on the Joule GPS+ while enjoying the scenery of virtual courses the world over. Or, if you don't have a flair for the exotic, you can actually create your own virtual training route to celebrate your favorite local summer loop all winter long.

The Phantom's fit is adjustable at four points. The saddle moves fore and aft and the seatpost can be raised and lowered. The handlebars receive the same treatment: fore and aft, up and down. You can also swap your saddle and pedals from road bike to stationary cycle. It's not an exact replica of your outdoor friend, but the Phantom 3 lets you create a fit and feel that closely mimic—if not virtually mirror—your beloved machine. But don't worry, it's only really cheating if you get caught. Your bike never has to know.

The Phantom's frame is made of steel, the old standby, and the base consists of a pair of steel chevrons with adjustable feet for a stable platform whether you're mashing, grinding, or just virtual-noodling. The 48-pound flywheel is situated at the rear, so you don't gum it up with sweat. (We still recommend having a fan set up nearby, because you also don't want to gum-up anything else.) The handlebar-mounted bottle holders will keep you supplied with plenty of water to sweat out, and CycleOps' inclusion of a freewheel means you can literally coast during virtual descents.
