If you don't have the Craft Active Windstopper Long Sleeve Crew, we feel bad for you. And if you've spent countless hours out on the cold road without any base layer, we extend a Gandhi-like compassion towards you for your suffering. Featuring a combination of time-tested proprietary and patented materials and a barely-there fit, the Active WindStopper Long Sleeve Crew will provide the insulation you need to get through winter.

Craft's Active WindStopper Long Sleeve Crew is made from a blend of channel-stitched polyester and W.L. Gore's WindStopper fabrics. The amalgamation of materials provides a soft-to-touch base layer that wicks moisture from the skin to the quick-drying surface. Not only highly breathable, the Active Crew is also 100% windproof. This translates to a moisture-free, abrasion-halting, warmth-retaining base layer that protects your body from windy conditions, and insulates without overheating.

Solid baselayer

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

A fine base layer that does its job blocking wind and wicking moisture. Wearing one of these extends the temperature range I can get away without putting on a soft shell jacket when riding. With this layer, a thermal long-sleeved jersey and either a wind vest or jacket, I've been out in mid-40's weather without a problem.

This does not have the wind stopper fabric on the shoulders--which I think is important--like the Extreme Active version of this base layer does. But it's also $35 cheaper, too. If you watch, sometimes the Extreme version will go on sale. If you can wait, save your pennies for that one, otherwise, this one is not a bad substitute.

A note on sizing. It does fit a little looser than I like base layers to fit, but I'm used to wearing form/race fit jerseys. Your mileage may vary.

Must have for winter riding or skiing

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This garment has a 2-ply front face that is very effective at stopping wind. It's a base layer designed for skin contact, and works best that way. (Pile layers on top of this for colder weather.) It works well with your heart rate monitor and will not disrupt the signal in wind, unlike some jerseys and base layers.

Although I love it and use it all the time, it gets 4 stars for shrinking a bit and having frustratingly short sleeves. I still keep buying it and would miss it if it was gone, so 4 stars is good enough!
