It's not surprising that Pro Team Astana riders put their faith in Corima's wheels in order to claim victory at this year's Giro. After all, the French manufacturer's wheels have consistently provided the exact precision and attention to detail that you'd expect from a brand that started out in the aeronautics sector. The new Viva 'S' Carbon Clincher Road Wheels are placed at the top of its clincher pack, perfectly illustrating that seemingly elusive 'do-anything' carbon clincher that we're always searching for. And thankfully, the hunt might now just be over, as these 32mm wheels are light enough to be used on the steepest of climbs, spin up fast on the flats, and remain exceptionally stable in crosswinds.
With a background in producing mechanical molds in the fields of automotive and aeronautics, French manufacturer Corima branched into the cycling arena by launching its first disc wheel in 1988. Its wheels quickly caught on with track cyclists and road racers around the world, as the manufacturing precision and composite expertise was noticeably superior to anything that its competitors were making at the time. The tradition of pushing carbon boundaries hasn't let up for Corima, as its years of composite know-how and constant innovations continue to set records and propel cyclists to victory in the most renowned races on the planet. An integral part of this success is derived from each of Corima's wheel components being built in-house. For the new Viva 'S' Clincher Wheels, this is no exception. The hubs and rims used to build this lightweight clincher were manufactured under the same roof in its Southern France facility.
For the construction of the 32mm Viva rim, Corima used pre-impregnated sheets of 3K (3000 filaments per square weave) carbon fiber for the wheel. These sheets were then formed into its torsion box 'Concept 2D' shape, which results in a subtle 'U-shaped' profile with a moderate 22.6mm width. Corima also uses its HPS technology with its carbon clincher rims, meaning that they are made of 100% carbon, without incorporating any metallic parts. The reasoning behind this is to keep the weight as low as possible by not adding any unnecessary metal into the rim composition. And, besides lending itself to Corima's signature refined gloss and apparent carbon weave finish, this layup design also provides heightened levels of aerodynamics, stiffness, and ride quality compared to more traditional 'V-shaped' wheel profiles. It's a shape that Corima refined through extensive CAD designs and wind tunnel testing before the final design was selected. Throughout these revisions, Corima ultimately discovered that by applying this specific width-to-height ratio, aerodynamics were able to be improved without sacrificing any strength.
One of the biggest contributors to the Viva 'S' wheels' compliant ride quality and light weight (around 1440g for the set), is the spoke lacing pattern. Corima built the wheels with 18 spokes at the front and 20 at the rear. The lacing pattern was strategically arranged in a way that provides uniform tension throughout. At the rear wheel, the 12 drive-side spokes were cross-laced in order to deliver the most efficient transmission of power directly to the rear wheel. Additionally, the arrangement of these bladed Sapim CX -Ray spokes provides an incredible level of stiffness and durability to the wheelset.
The Viva 'S' wheels rely on chrome-plated aluminum hubs. The latest 'S' version of its aluminum hubs were built with both titanium and aluminum in order to create a stable, lightweight platform. On the rear wheel, three tempered steel transmission pawls were spaced at 120 degree intervals within a 30-tooth ratchet ring. This ensures a fast and smooth engagement the moment that you apply pressure to the pedals.
The Corima Viva 'S' Carbon Clincher Road Wheels are supplied with brake pads, quick-release skewers, and a wheel bag. They are available the color Black, in a 700c size, and with either a Shimano/SRAM or Campagnolo compatible freehub body. Please note that these wheels are sold individually, and that the Shimano/SRAM freehub body is available in both 9-/10-speed and 10-/11-speed version.
