The tread of the Continental Ultra Sport Clincher Tire bears great resemblance to Conti's all-time best-selling high-end clincher, the GP4000. In our minds that's an indication of what the Ultra Sport will ride like -- low rolling resistance with excellent grip and durability. You get excellent puncture-protection, too, thanks to its multi-layer casing (it's 3 fabric plies, to be exact, the same as the GP4000). Since Continental makes the Ultra Sport clincher with 84 TPI, it keeps the price in check while keeping the weight at a happy place of 240g. If you're looking for a true all purpose tire -- reasonably light for race day, nicely tough for all-conditions training -- this should be on your short list. Black rubber with Black sidewalls. 700x23 only.

Great Value Tire

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought a set of these for my wife's Synapse and they are turning out to be just right for her riding. She does 15-20 miles twice a week at a moderate speed to augment her running and other fitness regimenes. At 240 grams, these are only 35 grams heavier than the Conti 4000s but cost about a quarter of them. So you have to make trade offs. Looks like they are going to give many care free miles. If you are looking for a good low cost trainer, this is it.

Great value

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have been riding this tire on me commuter bike for 3 years now. These tires are not the most resilient to pinch flats or thorns. They do however have decent grip on dry surfaces. In the wet they still grip but you will need more room to stop with them, and you will want to ease into your turns. Over the years now I have noticed that the rear tire will start to wear flat pretty quickly if you ride a lot, especially in hot climates. I have seen the sidewalls show some signs of wear as well but this is after many many miles have been put on the tire. My impression of these tires is they are great for someone looking for a great value. If you need a 4 season tire or something that is very resilient then you may want to look somewhere else.

Decent tire so far

Ridden with this tire for about 5 months and only one flat. The tire has gotten the job done so far. Not sure about the tread for winter riding. Not much tread in the middle. The tire is showing some weird stress marks on in from inflation.

Durable, Grippy, Moderately Fast

A decent tire for the price. I've ridden them all fall and winter and only got 4-5 flats and never any serious cuts. They also descend pretty well, almost as well as the GP4000. Good for training, but get a faster tire for race day.

I have a 1971 peugeot px-10 w/ mavic rims...

I have a 1971 peugeot px-10 w/ mavic rims and tubular tires w/ presta valves. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that the replacements that I require are 700c x 23 and I need the presta valve since all of my tires (the other rims are tires plus tube and are also 700c x23 w/ presta valve) use the same valve and I have an air pump for presta valve. Can you recommend a resilient tubular tire that fits my specs that is less than $100/pair?

More time repairing than riding.

I ran a set of these for a little while. For me these were garbage, I was averaging a flat about every 8 miles. They are cheap, but not cheap enough for their poor puncture resistance. Cuts go all the way through the carcass of the tire very easily and they really hold on to shards of glass. I had to remove the tires from the wheels and pick all the glass out of them. I tend to try to ride smart and avoid obvious flat hazards. You are better off spending a few bucks more and getting a better tire. After switching to the Schwable Ultremo ZX flats were a thing of the past with better grip and lower rolling resistance. These do work fine on my trainer though since they aren't seeing the roads anymore.

Decent

They aren't super resistant to flats, and any punctures will grow in size quickly. Sharp things will eat chunks out of it, but if you ride nice clean roads this is a good tire for the price.

I find bike tire and tubes sizes quite confusing. I currently have a road bike whose tires are 27"

I was told that I could get a tire that was 700x 1 1/4
But all I am seeing is 700x23 - could I use these tires? And what is the difference between the 23 and the 1 1/4 anyway? Sorry so sound like an idiot but, while I love riding my bike, I'm just starting to learn the technical side of things.

Since you have a 27 inch tire you are likely riding a vintage (pre-1990s) road bike. The 700c and 27inch tire differ in bead diameter. The fact is the 700x23 or 700x anything will not fit your bike. If you are running a 27x1.25 now buy that same size to be sure of a good fit.

The continental ultra sport you are looking at here comes in the 27x1.25 size but is not stocked at realcyclist. It is a great all purpose tire find it and buy it.

Grippin the turns

These are pretty tuff tires. I had some specialized tires on my bike for a while and was getting flats left and right. The Continental Ultra can take a lot of abuse from holes and rocks, plus they can hold corners super nice!

Maximum inflation pressure is listed on all tires, ranges not always. Inflation pressure is a user preference. In a nutshell for road bikes the higher the pressure the less rolling resistance but the rougher the ride. But there is way more to it than that.

TPI is Threads Per Inch. It is similar to thread count in sheets. The higher the thread count the softer and more supple the tire is.

These tires will fit on your 700c rim. The bead profile (the width between beads)will be the same with the 28 and 23. One difference could be with the tubes though. Check the size of the tubes you currently have. If they are bigger, which I suspect they are, you will have a hard time squeezing the bigger tube into a size 23 tire.

plenty of talcon powder recommended. line all of it with talcon powder, prevents nipping of the inner tube on the inside of the tyre when you go in a pot hole or somin.
