Traction matters.

The Supersonic line is for no-holds-barred race-only rubber. The Continental Race King Supersonic tire is thus the most-perfectly speed-optimized version of the Race King tires for people racing cross-country, enduros, and marathons. To this end, Continental saves weight by eliminating the "breaker belt" that is often found under the tread to reduce the likelihood of cuts through the casing under the tread. The tread rubber is slightly thinned-out for more weight savings. Black Chili compound rubber is used for great grip. And finally, the tire is hand made in Germany for the ultimate in quality control. Like a shooting star, the tire is fast, but not long-lived.

The tire debuted on the World Cup circuit in 2008. Irina Kalentieva won the Cup and the Worlds on a first-generation prototype. Continental knew they were onto something special. It did what she asked of the tire, feedback that was music to the tire designers' ears. They imagined that a light, large-ish casing, with finely-gritted tread bars in Black Chili would be a tire that could take on just about any fast, technical course.

The Continental Race King Supersonic Tire has a three-ply wrap of 60 thread per inch casing material for a 180tpi casing. There are two sizes, 26 x 2.0" and 26 x 2.2". The tread rubber is Black Chili compound, and the bead foldable. The recommended tire pressure is 50psi with a max of 65psi. The ETRTO size is 50-559 for the 2.0", 55-559 for the 2.2". The tread and casing is black. 430g (2.0), 460g (2.2).

  • Foldable, three-ply design provides puncture protection and durability
  • 180 tpi case for a supple ride and improved cornering
  • Extra light at 460 grams (2.2in Supersonic)
  • Recommended pressure 50-65 psi

Pretty Good.

Only used the tire once because I needed a quick replacement that didn't rub on my swing arm, but it seemed to work out just fine. On loose rock and hardpack, it gripped nicely. I have since replaced the race king with a 2.4 TrailKing and love this tire.

For those that are curious, this tire is not made in Germany and the sidewalls are a brownish color.

Jake: What rim width did you use for the Race King and for the Trail King?

Aggressive Low-Profile

This tire has provided endless miles of dependable single track training and racing. The tire is light yet has strong sidewalls to get you through miles of real mountain bike terrain. The tread is very low-profile lending to a fast rolling tire, yet grabby side knobs keep the tire from washing out. I have raced this tire from Moab to the Tetons to the High Cascades and been pleased everytime. The tire is not a mudder, especially in clay type materials. Then again, if its muddy wait for the single track to dry.
I have used this in the 26" and 29" version, with a tubeless setup, and keep going back to them. Run Stan's Sealant for the ultimate protection.

This Conti Race King has a folding kevlar bead. The tech specs on the right offer it up too.

I'm pretty sure they print "Handmade in Germany" in big letters on the side of most of their tires.
