It’s called the Race King for a reason.
There is more to a tire than knobs. The Continental Race King 29 does its majik not only with the low, finely-gritted tread bars, but with the large, supple casing and round profile. While this is a tire for big wheels, it doesn't ride like a big tire, which is to say, it doesn't feel slow. It feels responsive.
Go up, or down, and it grips. The transition to turning is smooth. Lean on the tire for a long-radius turn and it is still gripping as well as it did while riding a straight line.
A word of warning. Early iterations of this tire were made on an under-sized mold. The result is a tire that is closer to 1.9" than the 2.2" intended. Going forward, the tire has been re-done and is now a true 2.2".
The Continental Race King 29 has a three-ply wrap of 60 thread per inch casing material for a 180tpi casing and is foldable. The Continental Race King ProTection 29 has a four-ply wrap of 60 thread per inch casing material for a 240tpi casing. The recommended tire pressure is 50psi, with a max pressure of 65psi. The ETRTO size is 55-663 and the tire size is 29 x 2.2" or 29 x 2.0". The tread and casing is black.

Best fast accelerating tough tire for the 29er
This tire is one of the best tires ever to grace our singletrack afflictions. This is NOT a UST tire, you need to run a tube (but with some STANS sealant they will run tubeless). I have put thousands of training and racing miles on these tires and they perform perfectly in damp and dry conditions. The tire especially shines as being fast, acceleration and speed are it eureka moments. After all, we ride 29er's for their speed and ability to maintain speed and handling.
The Black Chili Rubber compound is a nice mix of super tacky yet I get good mileage out of this tire. The tire seated on my NoTubes rims with a hand pump, gotta like that. The tire is round with good squared corner knobs so the tire never feels like you are on marbles when cornering, tracks well.
I ride a hardtail mostly and therefore use the 2.2 for added volume and thus better compliance and cushion for long rides and races.
Mud is not their time to shine, the knobs are small and tightly spaced this turns this tread into a slick quickly. Look at Running the Speed King in muddy conditions and smaller size (2.0-2.1) so the tire cuts through the mud to solid ground.
Ultimate 29er for Dry/Tacky conditions
This tire has been the best low-pro rubber put on a wheel. The tread compound is tacky and has good corner knobs for excellent traction at speed in the corners. The tough sidewall and large volume adds to a tire I don't worry about flatting on no matter how hard I push it through the rough. I use Stan's No Tube sealant and can pump up this tubular with a hand pump. Cannot say enough good about this tire, get some for yourself and find out.

I ride a Felt hard tail carbon 29. It has small block 8's (Kenda). The riding conditions are getting wet here (Oregon Cascades) and the small blocks have been washing out. The Continental Race King looks like a good wet weather riding pattern. Is it?
Also, some folks that I ride with will run a thinner tire on the rear. Would it be logical to run the 2.2 in the front and a 2.0 in the rear?
The Race King is an awesome all around 29er tire. I ran them on a Felt Nine Team all summer. If you are looking for a tire for lots of wet trail conditions I would strongly recommend the Mtn King 29er tires. They handle wet/muddy conditions much better - The Race King can pack up w/ mud pretty quick. For dry to slightly moist and tacky the RK cannot be beat. Either way the 2.2s front and back. The 2.0s are super skinny
